^ Exactly. It could have been a total waste of time for him, but it wasnt.
All these free mixtapes also came at a time when people were buying less CDs. Then to get one FOR FREE that's at a higher caliber than most rap you have to PAY FOR. Wayne kind of bled into popular culture that way.
I wouldnt buy a CD from a random dude on the street, but if that same guy was just giving them out... I would give it a listen.
Wayne took that mentality and used it. Very Well. Even people who thought he was shit still had his mixtapes.
in late 2007, Think about it: No Videos on major rotation, No Major album out in a while, No Singles on regular radio rotation and yet people were listening to his shit more than ever before. THATS WHY.

Personally, I think Lil'Wayne best songs are in his albums , like to me the songs in his mixtape i listen to it like 20-30 times then i get bored i have listened C3 like 300 times. I'm dead serious.

Because a album is made to sell and there's gonna be a variety of music for the fans to pick from. The mix tape is better because spitting raw verses and no record company is controlling it.
