So I'm a huge fan of Nicki Minaj and I will always be but I'm not like 'a regular barb'. I don't like her pop songs (Starships and PTA are nice poppy songs but not for her). I didn't really like Pink Friday because all the tracks had the same formula (rap verse - singing chorus - rap verse - singing chorus - singing bridge - singing chorus) and it was just too soft, it needed more songs like Did it on'em and Roman's Revenge. Full hardcore rap where's she's going hard as hell. We got those at Roman Reloaded but we all know what happened there (7/8 hardcore hip-hop songs and then just pop/dance music and pop/R&B ballads, all sang).
Now I think the problem with Nicki was that she was searching for herself as an artist. I think she's searching how to make her own music as good as possible but she finds that hard. Nicki never really had a hit that was 100% rap, Drake and Wayne have enough. That's why she is so good at her features because she doesn't have to worry about the rest.
If you watched the AskNicki interview (which I highly recommend since it's a lot about Wayne, hip-hop music etc. just a great honest interview) but you can see she's trying to tell that the whole pop thing in Roman Reloaded was just experimenting and for once. She looks back at it as she does at Wayne's Rebirth (rock album), amazing but just for once.
Now here's the problem. Because her pop songs were her biggest hits to date and her hip-hop songs (by herself) weren't really big hits, most people that listen to hip-hop thinks she's a pop star and have give up on her. The only thing that remind them of Nicki being a rapper is probably one of her verses on a track of another artist. She's trying to win them back though. She stopped with the outrageous outfits and wigs (she looks classy now and only wears one kind of blonde hairstyle), she is doing a lot of features again where's she rapping really good, she's planning on only making hip-hop music now and she's really showing her body (booty pics, Freaks video, High School video). She wants to become a female version of Jay-Z.
Do you think she can do it? I hope so. She has enough talent that ain't the problem. The problem is how she's gonna convert this into her music. Curious to hear what you guys think about it!
