Essential Info: Sean Garrett is what you call a super songwriter. His pedigree is unmatched by most. You should already know his stats with artists such as Beyoncé and Usher. In 2008 though, Garrett introduced the world to his other talent: singing. No more relegating his voice for reference tracks. Sean wanted to break through as an artist.
Unfortunately, his debut LP, Turbo 919, was only released in Japan. That's cool though. S. Dot (S. Dot as in Sean not Shaheem Reid) came back with a key cameo on Mario's monster "Break Up" (a record he also wrote). Gearing up for his new LP, Garrett just dropped the mixtape The Pen featuring songs from his vault such as Turbo's slept-on gem "Patron," underground records and his new single "Get It All" with Nicki Minaj.
"I been hotter than summer school," Nicki raps on the record, which is about a man dealing with a temptress. "Even then I used to make the mutha----ers drool. ..."
"Get It All" isn't the only record on the album Garrett has with the Young Money camp. Lil Wayne is on his second single.
"Man, you know we got a lot going on. 2010's going to be a big year," the songwriter nicknamed "The Pen" by Jay-Z said recently in Dallas during NBA All-Star weekend.
"First of all, I got my new record out. It's called 'Get It All' featuring Nicki Minaj. Me and Wayne just did my second video, which is called 'Girls on Girls,' or 'Girls,' for a better choice of words. It's actually Sean Garrett, T-Pain and Lil Wayne — or as they would say, 'T-Wayne.' So this is going to be a big year. We got a big announcement we're gonna be doing in a couple of weeks, so there's a lot coming from that situation."
Garrett is alluding to his negotiations for a recording home. After leaving Interscope records, the multi-talented Atlanta resident says he's close to inking a brand-new deal.
"I've been definitely working on my album. You know I had to go through a few political situations to get my album where I wanted it to be, and to get the situation where I wanted it to be," Sean explained. "Finally it's coming together in the right way. I got a lot of my friends that's endorsing me: Lil Wayne, my man Drake, Minaj. A lot of people that's definitely pulling for me, so with this album, I've had a lot of opportunity to take time and really craft a great album for the world. My album's coming this summer. I'm leading off right now with my record like I said. 'Get It All," it's doing really, really incredible already.
Featuring Nicki Minaj: "I just did Nicki's first single. It's coming in a week or so. Explosive record, I can't wait for y'all to hear it, man. It's just given me a lot of time to create some real special music that's a lot different from what people expected," Garrett said.
"I'm really, really excited about Nicki because I think that what Nicki has understood is that she can do whatever she wants to do," he added about the sexy female MC. "She's a dreamer just like myself. I feel like when you're creative ... it's basically like her whole image thing. She's taken her image to a whole other level with the whole Barbie thing. And I think she's very imaginative and her music's great and she's not scared of nothing. She's fearless. As long as you're fearless in life you can do anything."
