What's the world record for the most "likes" on Facebook in 24 hours? An 89-year-old cookie company wants to find out - and set it.
Tuesday morning at 9:00 a.m., Oreo posted on their Facebook wall, "'Like' this post to join Oreo fans around the world in setting a Guinness World Record for most 'Likes' to a post in 24 hours."
Seven hours later, almost 70,000 people had "liked" the post. Oreo said Monday that their goal was 50,000 which they've already surpassed with 17 hours left to go at press time.
Then the creme-centered cookie found unexpected competition: Lil Wayne.
At 2:08 p.m. Tuesday, the rapper posted on his Facebook wall, "Everyone, please 'Like' this post. I'm trying to break the Guinness World Record for most 'Likes' on a post in 24 hours. Let's get it!!!"
Just 90 minutes later, he already had over 300,000 fans clicking the "like" button for the post. Sorry, Oreo, that's the way the cookie crumbles.
Granted, Lil Wayne has the initial advantage as his Facebook page has 20 million fans, whereas Oreo has 16.5 million fans. Also, Oreo has registered its record attempt with Guinness World Records beforehand, which may be required for Lil Wayne to assume victory.
However, according to Mashable, Lil Wayne's digital manager, Mazy Kazerooni, was more interested in displaying the artist's social media prowess than a competition. Lil Wayne will be performing March 7 in Buffalo in his first tour date since his release from prison in November for gun possession.
