Beat Battle: A History of Lil Wayne's 10 Biggest Production Problems | VIBE
The Lil Wayne Song: "Lollipop," from Tha Carter III (2008 )
The Producer: Jim Jonsin
The Problem: In April 2010, Jonsin sued Young Money Entertainment and Cash Money Records for $500,000 over unpaid royalties stemming from the lead single to Carter III. The two sides seem to have patched up their problems, though, because Jonsin reportedly did a bunch of work with Wayne for his upcoming album, Tha Carter IV.
The Lil Wayne Song: "Playing With Fire," from Tha Carter III (2008 )
The Producer: StreetRunner
The Problem: Wayne was sued by the Rolling Stones publisher Abkco Music Inc. in July 2008 after StreetRunner allegedly used an unauthorized sample of the Stones song, "Play With Fire," on this bonus track from Carter III. His label eventually settled the case in January 2009 by removing the song from digital copies of the album and paying royalties for using the Stones sample on the physical album.
The Lil Wayne Song: "A Milli," from Tha Carter III (2008 )
The Producer: Bangladesh
The Problem: In July 2010, Bangladesh revealed that despite the massive success of "A Milli," the street single from Carter III, he was never paid for producing the song. However, a few months later, Birdman released a statement indicating that Bangladesh hadn't been paid because he had used an unauthorized sample on the song. "There is no merit to this claim," the statement read. "Bangladesh incorporated a sample without informing Cash Money. [Cash Money] successfully settled the copyright infringement claims that Bangladesh caused with other third parties and his producer and composition shares were wiped out by the sample owners."
The Lil Wayne Song: "Lollipop," "Let The Beat Build," and "Mrs. Officer," from Tha Carter III (2008 )
The Producer: Darius "Deezle" Harrison
The Problem: In March 2011, Deezle filed a lawsuit against Young Money Entertainment and Cash Money Records and claimed that he hadn't been paid for any of the work he did on Carter III. He filed the lawsuit for $20 million and the case is still pending.
