Debuting immediately after his performance at the Video Music Awards, Lil Wayne’s Tha Carter IV sold nearly 1 million in its opening week, more than doubling the performance of Jay-Z and Kanye’s Watch The Throne (in a conversation with FORBES, Cash Money Records chief Bryan “Birdman” Williams denied buying up massive quantities of copies to boost sales). Meanwhile, Billboard reported that eight of the album’s singles surged onto the Hot 100 chart, joining three existing singles to give Wayne a whopping 11 songs on the list. Only the Beatles have held more concurrent positions, placing 14 songs on the Hot 100 in April 11, 1964.
