Nicki Minaj has gone pop in every way. Lyrically, the Queens-raised rapper is often less than sugary sweet, but she's crafted a DayGlo image that makes her the perfect person to shill corn syrup. And now she's going to be paid to do just that.
Also in music news, the world is fascinated by Beyoncé's post-baby body (of course), Johnny Depp duets with Marilyn Manson on a new cover song, and Arcade Fire schooled UT Austin students on the socioeconomic crises that continue to plague Haiti.
• Nicki Minaj is following in the footsteps of her Cash Money colleague Lil Wayne with a very lucrative soda sponsorship in the works, Forbes reports. Derek Jackson, head of the Glu agency, revealed that Minaj had already filmed a commercial in South America for a new Pepsi beverage called "Pop."
Minaj's commercial will likely air sometime in the next two months, leading up to the "explosive" launch of a new drink. Given Pepsi's track record of launching new beverages (Crystal Pepsi, we hardly knew ye), this could be a big ol' candy-colored mess.
Just last week, Lil Wayne surprised South by Southwest audiences with a performance at the Austin City Limits venue in concert with his new DEWeezy campign for Mountain Dew. The city was plastered in "DEWeezy" posters for the launch, confusing hipsters from around the globe. Yay for diabetes!
• Lil Wayne may star in an original film paid for by Pepsi and Mountain Dew. We're sure it's going to include only the classiest product placement.
• No one should be surprised that new mom Beyoncé Knowles has already slimmed down since giving birth in January, but since it's Beyoncé, everyone is pretty much fascinated. How does she do it?!
Well: It's already been established that this woman works harder than the rest of New York City combined. When you add that to the fact that she could probably pave her palatial home with gold bullion, you've got a lady who's ready to jump back on the road before her daughter has even cut her first teeth.
Mrs. Carter looked fetching as usual in a fitted blue dress at Michelle Obama's fundraiser for her husband's re-election. Also spotted at the event were Beyoncé's husband, Jay-Z, his mother, and her own mom, Tina.
