Sunday is the first day of the week. The week is designed around Jewish beliefs. The Sabbath is the "day of rest" when God finished creation, also called the seventh day. The Sabbath is Saturday. So, if Saturday is the seventh day then Sunday is the first. Sunday also gets it's name from ancient beliefs that in the morning when the sun came up, the world started anew, thus a new weeks starts on Sunday.

so why does my whole town and all those in england closed half day on a Sunday ? why do all shops need a special license to sell alcohol on a Sunday why is it standard UK law the all and i mean all shops must only operate for a specific amount of time only on Sunday where as all over days APART FROM SUNDAY shops are allowed to be open for businesses and sell alchol 24h ????
