Tuesday's Lil Wayne concert drew in people from all backgrounds—from fans to promoters, even war veterans. There was particular group of vets that was there for a different reason—and it's all because of a controversial video of Lil Wayne that went viral back in June.
A Lil Wayne music video went viral after an American flag fell to the ground and he stomped on it. Members of the Omaha Post 1 Chapter of American Legion Riders stood outside the concert at the Century Link Center—not to protest, but to show their allegiance to the flag.
Bob Swanson, of the legion said he was disappointed when he saw the video, just like any American would.
The particular video that hit the web was shot behind the scenes, it's not in the official music video. If you watch it, you can see the flag fall from a crew member's hands and Lil Wayne stepping back and forth on it.
"You know, it's not illegal to desecrate the flag. It's just disrespectful," said Swanson.
That's why war veterans and members of the legion stood for two hours outside the concert, holding their flags with pride.
"It's ironic that his event provides us with an opportunity to promote the flag in a respectful manner," said Swanson.
Swanson said it was the best way for him and fellow members to show their loyalty to the stars and stripes of their country.
"It's a flag, but it's our flag, it's our country's flag. It stands for a lot," said Swanson.
The flag stomping portion of Lil Wayne's official video has been taken out. American Legion Riders across the country have demonstrated flag lines at his concerts. Lil Wayne's representatives said he did give an apology for the act.
