Lil Wayne wanted the Saturday night crowd inside Toyota Center to know three things. He believes in God. He's nothing without his fans. And he's nothng without his fans. (No, that's not an echo.)


Indeed, there was a crowd-pleasing energy to his performance, which was as much pop spectacle as it was rap show. He's grown into an engaging performer.

A multilevel set housed a live band, DJ and smoke machines. There were flashing lights and Auto Tune and gyrating dancers. Wayne raced from side to side.

"H-town, what the (expletive) up?" he asked between enthusiastic sing-alongs I'm Goin' In, Look At Me Now and A Milli.

Nicki Minaj - all bride of Frankenstein hairdo and neon body suit - stole the spotlight with an appearance midway through Wayne's set. She tore through Roman's Revenge in football pads.

Rapper Rick Ross filled his half-hour set with booming bass, soulful hooks and plugs for new album Self Made . He also welcomed local rapper Trae onstage for a song.
