After a fairly decent debut, Lil Wayne is back again, with one of his best studio albums, Lights Out. Now, while some won't agree with me, I think this is probably on of his best studio albums. But, Lil Wayne albums have never really been anything special to me (his mixtapes are far superior) so this one shines out more than others. So, let's go ahead and get started on this review.
Lights Out [2000]
01 - Watch Them People [No Rating]
02 - Get Off The Corner [5/5] - Very similar to Tha Block Is Hot in the beat, vibe, and the sound effects. Great way to open up the album. Really nice hook and banging beat.
03 - On The Grind [3.5/5] - Wayne uses different flows to tie together this track. It's nothing great, but it really sets the mood of the album.
04 - Hit U Up [4/5] - Nice beat and catchy hook. Each rapper does their part in making this a solid track, one of the better tracks on the album.
05 - Everything [5/5] - A funky, oldschool sounding dedication to Lil Wayne's father, Rabbit. Really emotional and dark. Classic track, not lyrical amazing, but one of the better tracks on the album.
06 - Fuck Wit Me Now [3.5/5] - A song that get's me pumped up everytime I hear it. The beat sounds nice and the hook is cool.
07 - Lil One (Feat. Big Tymers) [2/5] - Can easily be called the worst track on the album. The beat is nice, but it doesn't go along with the conversation going on.
08 - Break Me Off (Feat. Big Tymers & Unplugged) [3/5] - An interesting tune. I'm kinda mixed with this track, to be honest. It feels a bit mediocre and meh.
09 - Skit [No Rating]
10 - Wish You Would [4/5] - Nice way to kick off the second half of the album. It has a fun, funky vibe to it.
11 - Grown Man [5/5] - Great storytelling takes place. Wayne talks about how it's hard to be on your own, man. It really is interesting to see how he feels and what his has to say.
12 - Shine (Feat. Hot Boys) [4.5/5] - The poppy classic with decent lyrics and a hilarious hook from Mannie Fresh. It's about the same ol' same ol', but the beat and the sound effects make me repeat it whenever i'm listening to the album.
13 - Jump Jiggy[4/5] - It sounds a little monotone, but it's a pretty solid track with a relaxed vibe and summer-ish beat.
14 - Realized [4/5] - Kinda sounds like a No Limit beat... But maybe that's just me?
15 - Tha Blues [4/5] - Interesting sound. This was a nice experiment that worked out very well. The lyrics tells about Wayne's experiences on the block, and how he gives people "Tha Blues."
16 - Let's Go (Feat. Big Tymers) [3/5] - Like i've mentioned, i'm not a fan of tracks with the Big Tymers, so this one is nothing special to me.
17 - Biznite [3.5/5] - Hilarious track with a funny hook.
18 - Act An Ass (Feat. B.G.) [3/5] - IMO, just a club song. Not one of my favorites.
19 - Beef [3.5/5] - Nice way to end the album with an interesting beat and lyrical content.
Best tracks on the album:
1. Get Off The Corner
2. Everything
3. Shine
4. Grown Man
5. Hit U Up
Overall: 64.5/85 Great
One of his better albums, but nothing close to perfect. It's listenable, IMO and it experimented with different forms of production.
