The one that i've been anxious to review for some time. I love this album from start to finish, it's one of Wayne's best albums to date. But, let's get a little bit of backstory first. Lil Wayne debuted five years prior to this album. He had a very raw debut, a good sophomore album and a debatable third release. This album was made when Cash Money records was in a very dark period. Cash Money was getting to stale too quickly and the Hot Boys had just recently broke up, so Lil Wayne decided to put all of Cash Money Records on his back and made his fourth studio album where he stepped his game up big time. Ladies and gentlemen, this is Tha Carter.
Tha Carter [2004]
- Walk In [5/5] - "Front door livin room young nigga switchin we, what you need, get you crack get you weed! Make yo way to the back look ahead and see, white bitch in the bathroom givin head for speed" Wayne introduces a very awesome system with this three part track. Each track (Walk In/Inside/Walk Out) all have the same beat and very diverse lyrical content depending on where it's placed in the album. It's a very cool concept that he later used for the second and fourth installment of Tha Carter series. But, let's get to this track. This track is a bout Lil Wayne giving you a tour of his building, Tha Carter. It's a no hook freestyle with flexible metaphors and punchlines.
- Go DJ [5/5] - "Murder 101, the hottest nigga under the sun" The second single from the album and one of my all time favorite hip hop songs! Go DJ is what brought many Lil Wayne fans into the building and has kept them there for a while. With it's banging beat, loose metaphors and cut throat lyrics, Go DJ kicks off the album with a bang! Wayne raps about how he's the ish, knocking blades into garden snakes asses and the homosexual community getting aids while he's getting paid. It's a true classic that's both hilarious and clever at the same time.
- This is the Carter (Feat. Mannie Fresh) [5/5] - "Who am I? Young Wizzle, for shizzle! Flow sicker than the third floor in hospitals" This is the Carter pretty much sums up what the album is going to be like. Wayne is a back, a lot more rich and a whole lot smarter.
- BM J.R. [5/5] - "Sweet potato ass nigga, you lemon merangue, apple custard, cherry jelly, don't make me get the biscuit buster!" Now while some newer fans might not agree, this is one of Wayne's top tracks of all time. He spits hilarious punchlines out the arse and seemingly never stops. This no hook freestyle-ish style is what makes Wayne a great rapper.
- Skit [No Rating]
- I Miss My Dawgs (Feat. Reel) [5/5] - One of Wayne's best tracks of all time. In this track, Wayne vents about how he misses his Hot Boys companions and reminisses about the good ole days. A true classic.
- We Don't (Feat. Baby) [5/5] - An underrated tune with a good verse from Baby (Finally...). Wayne basically says that he doesn't give a fizzuck about you hating, he'll hit you up and be out, for Cash mutha fuggin Money, baby.
- On My Own (Feat. Reel) [5/5] - Wayne talks about being on his own, for the most part. It's a slow paced track that's a good break, especially since we're getting to some of the more "hardcore" tracks.
- Tha Heat [4.5/5] - "I shoot ya arm leg leg arm head!" As cheesy as this track is, the video game sounding production, the catchy hook and the violent lyrics always make me listen to this track whenever i'm listening to the album.
- Cash Money Millionaires [5/5] - "I got a bitch in the back, got a hoe in the front, one cooking the crack, one rolling the blunt. You get pussy and ass, from a beautiful broad, if you're looking for that, holla at ya boy!" A very underrated track about Wayne being up there with the other Cash Money Millionaires. It has a variety of different flows, a catchy hook and interesting metaphors.
- Inside [5/5] - Continued from Walk In, Lil Wayne continues to give a tour of his building.
- Bring It Back (Feat. Mannie Fresh) [5/5] - "Best rapper alive... Since the best rapper retired!" The lead single from the album and a great way to kick off the second half of Tha Carter. It has a nice beat and nice hook and Wayne says he's the best rapper alive, since the best rapper retired (most likely referring to Jigga, who "retired" after The Black Album)
- Who Wanna [5/5] - At first, I didn't care for this track. But this track really shows off most of Wayne's potential and shows you why you don't wanna fux with Wayne.
- Skit [No Rating]
- Get Down (Feat. Baby) [4.5/5] - Wayne talks about how he was raised and how he get's down. This song has a nice hook and great beat.
- Snitch [4/5] - This track really slows down the pace of the album greatly. I really like where it's placed and the production.
- Hoes (Feat. Mannie Fresh) [3.5/5] - Easily the worst track on the album. Mannie gives it a nice beat and hilarious hook, but really shouldn't have had a verse, IMO.
- Only Way (Feat. Baby) [4/5] - A little bit repetitive (considering Get Down was two tracks ago).
- Earthquake (Feat. Jazze Pha) [4.5/5] - People give this track a lot of hate, but why? Sure, it's not as hardcore as some of the earlier stuff, but it really helps end the album smoothly. I like the hook and the production, but I think the title is kinda dumb, TBH.
- Ain't That A Bitch [5/5] - Ends the project with an epic beat, funny hook and interesting lyrics. I think this track is very underrated and needs a little more respect, IMO. I like it a lot. It's a really good song to be right at the end.
- Walk Out [3/5] - As the final track on the album, I expected a better freestyle from Lil Wayne. Something with a bit more punch that was a tad bit longer, but maybe that's just me...
