  • Rebirth Review

Well, it's the forum thread that's gonna get me banned, so I might as well try to get this over with. Rebirth is one of those "Tha fuck is nigguh thankin" moments. It's an album with heavy rock and pop influence. When I first heard that this album was coming out, I honestly was considering burning all my Wayne albums. I already expressed my opinions as Wayne being a sellout (which he is, go listen to BM J.R. then How to Love) but this added more fire to the flame. I don't like this album, at all, but it has a certain charm, which i'll explain at the end. But, on this review, the bad outweighs the good, so if you like the new, Lollipop, How to Love, singing, autotune, skater, popstar, sellout Lil Wayne (Tunechi) then I suggest to not read this review. I'm not going to flame this album, but I will give my opinions.

    Rebirth [2009]

01 - American Star (Feat. Shanell) [2/5] - I don't care for this track, TBH. The hook is kinda cheesy and Wayne's storytelling is alright at best. And it would have been better if Wayne didn't harmonize with autotune...

02 - Prom Queen (Feat. Shanell) [3.5/5] - I actually used to like the track, because I could relate to it. But the horrendous amount of autotune and corny rhymes made me open my eyes... It's not horrid, but I would have chosen a different lead single.

03 - Ground Zero [2.5/5] - Wayne does some weird Nicki Minaj-ish shit with his voice... I don't care for this track... It's... Just... Meh...

04 - Da Da Da [1/5] - Easily the worst track on the album... The nauseous production and the lack of lyrics make me loathe it.

05 - Paradice [3.5/5] - One of the better tracks, sadly. It would have a way higher rating if Wayne didn't sound so bad in it. It has some really nice storytelling and production, but Wayne could've done a lot better in making it sound decent.

06 - Get A Life [2/5] - Probably what all the Wayne hating assholes were saying when they heard this track. It's a just a tad bit repetitive and immature...

07 - On Fire [2.5/5] - With a reference to classic rock and a slightly disturbing music video, this was another single. I actually kinda like the song, but Wayne, this is what made it way harder to back you up from people who heard you after Lollipop. It's supposed to be a remake of a classic, but people call it ruining a classic. It's decent, for the most part.

08 - Drop The World (Feat. Eminem) [4/5] - It may be the best track on the album. Wayne vents out and tells some stories of what he says to haters. I like the metaphors and the lyrics, but the heat comes with Shady jumps on the track. Some of the new Eminem's best content is in this verse, sadly. It's not a classic, IMO, but I like this track a lot.

09 - Runnin (Feat. Shanell) [4/5] - The lyrics are kinda cheesy at points, but I do like the production, the metaphors, and the storytelling. If there were more tracks like this, then maybe Rebirth wouldn't have been a complete flop.

10 - One Way Trip (Feat. Kevin Rudolf) [3.5/5] - Another one of the better tracks on the album. I like the feature from Kevin Rudolf. I love when Wayne does stuff like this, when he puts someone small on one of his tracks to get them more known.

11 - Knockout (Feat. Nicki Minaj) [2/5] - I don't really feel this track. It's too poppy for me and I don't care for Nicki that much (I can dig her underground stuff, but she soldout way too early). She does a nice job on the hook, but her verse is...

12 - The Price Is Wrong [1.5/5] - Ouch... The track has nice storytelling, but kinda gets annoying after a while.

13 - I'll Die For You [3/5] - A more sincere track that Wayne does some storytelling. I don't like the autotune, but that's really one of the only flaws.

14 - I'm So Over You (Feat. Shanell) [2/5] - Hm... I thought this outro was a bit weak, IMO.

    Best tracks on the album:

    1. Drop The World
    2. Runnin
    3. Paradice
    4. One Way Trip
    5. On Fire

    Overall: 37/70 [2.5/5] Poor

Rebirth was a horrible idea. Wayne had fallen off his peak the he had during the C3 era. He was a pop star with a fanbase who'd wipe his arse if he lost his arms, which is pretty pathetic. After 08, people wondered why I turned from a stan to a halftime hater of Wayne, it's because of shiz like this. The idea would be okay, if Wayne was someone like Kanye. Kanye made a pop album, 808s & Heartbreaks, which isn't a classic, but still sounded great. Kanye has already knows how to make his music sound good even if he's saying the cheesiest thing ever ("Let's have a toast to the douchebags, let's have a toast to the assholes" - The shit still sounds good). But Wayne has a while to make music outside his genre sound good. While Paradice was one of the better songs of the album, he sounded pretty bad.

But, enough of my rambling. If you like hip hop (Jay-Z, Eminem, Nas, Kanye, Rakim, etc) then I suggest you stay as far away from this album as you can. But, if you like Wayne's bullshit that he does for the radio, like Lollipop, How to Love, or Got Money, then get this shit, now. I, for one, thought this album was poor. Mainly because I don't care for this new Lil Wayne that feeds the mainstream too much. No Ceilings, though being overrated, is a way more crafted, complete project. So, if you like Wayne's older material (Tha Carter II, Dedication 2, Da Drought 3) i'd suggest getting that more than this. Not only is it a hip hop mixtape, but it's free. The only reason I have this album is because I like collecting my favorite MC's albums, even the bad ones.

Next up, Wayne gets back to rapping...

Nah the reviews are cool. Hearing a persons honest opinion is fine. But Im just saying I think he's a little bias towards his mainstream music

You need to review IANAHB before C4. Chronological order, please.

And I'm glad you tried to review the album with the least bias you could give. I really only like two songs (I'll re listen to the album again), one of them being Ground Zero. The lyrics on that song alone make it 5 star worthy.

Rebirth, much like Tha Carter III, would've been way better off with session tracks (Girls Forever, Ready For The World, Politics, etc).

I disagree on some bits where I liked songs better than you did (or rated them)
But I think you were too nice about American Star, the song is one of the worst off the album imo and it ruined my first listen cause I was like oooh god no this is horrible.

But yeah I liked the following tracks which was a good thing.

I don't think Rebirth is that bad of an album. But it doesn't really do anything for me either, just average material all together.
Enjoyable but I haven't listened to it more than half a year after release.

i thank you on all your reviews because i mostly agree with what your sayin more than half the time. i've been a wayne fan since i could understand what he was saying(2005), and i thought C3 and rebirth were good albums. now granted, there no C1, C2(great albums), but they were not as bad as you make them seem. i respect your opinion because that's exactly how my brother thinks now, he was a fan before C3, and he thought he sold out to. i say it's not sellin out, it's expanding your fanbase. and usually the previous fanbase always feels like that artist sold out if he /she tries to do something different. but hey, I do appreciate your insight.

I am sure you don't want to listen to C4 either, but as a reviewer, you must. Remember your audience and try to post as neutral as possible. Yeah, you can add your personal thoughts here and there, but don't make it too obvious, ya know?
