Is this even necessary?
I mean c'mon. Let's be real. At this point, we all know which tracks on Tha Carter IV are half decent and which ones you should avoid at all costs. But, this is the last studio album that I have to review, so it ought to be interesting for you to here what I have to say. Now, while I loathe Tha Carter IV and this new "rapper" who replaced my favorite one after releasing one of the best mixtapes of all time, this album isn't hard to listen to. But that's only because the production makes it easy to chill to, that's it. Wayne's lyricism on this album was just horrendous, but you kinda have to expect that after...
But anywho, this review is going to be slightly different. It's gonna be the usual track by track review, but this time i'm adding something unique. I'm going to compare this album to Wayne's previous album, Tha Disappointment (or as you guys call it, Tha Carter III). I'll review a track and at the end, i'll put which C3 track I think it mirrors, since this album is a crappy version of C3, sorry, crappier version of C3.
Now, let's get this review out of tha park
Tha Carter IV [2011]
01 - Intro [1.5/5] - What the fuck is this shit? Where's the dope intro that I know Wayne for whenever I pop in one of his albums? Where's that energy? That cold lyricism? The production is there, but where's the lyricism? One of the worst intros that i've heard on any album... C'mon Wayne... This intro should have been your best...
C3 Mirror Track: 3 Peat
02 - Blunt Blowin' [3.5/5] - A decent track to start the flow of the album. The production feels like a C2 throwback beat, the lyricism is good at times and at times cheesy, the hook is hilarious, and the title is... Meh... The production is great, much like Let The Beat Build from C3.
C3 Mirror Track: Let The Beat Build
03 - Megaman [1.5/5] - With a Ransom throwaway beat and some of the most wack punchlines and rhymes i've heard from Wayne, this is the third track on C4. Nothing special about this track, IMO. Maybe I would've enjoyed it more if there weren't so many wack punchlines and that hashtag flow...
C3 Mirror Track: None
04 - 6 Foot 7 Foot (Feat. Cory Gunz) [4.5/5] - Probably the best track on the album. It still sounds great till this day and the punchlines are pretty clever. Cory Gunz also had a great verse at the very end. This track, of course, mirrors A Milli from C3. They have the same producers, similar beats, and that hard hitting lyricism from the mixtape Weezy.
C3 Mirror Track: A Milli
05 - Nightmares of the Bottom [2/5] - Ugh... Wayne... What the fuck man? This track had so much potential... Did you have to sound like you didn't want to record it? ... Wayne sounds very bored in this track... The live version is a lot better. You know what this song reminds me of? Gossip. Sad thing is, Gossip is a legendary song and even though Wayne didn't sound energetic, it's still better than this song... This song is just boring...
C3 Mirror Track: Gossip (It's on the bonus tracks, nukka)
06 - She Will (Feat. Drake) [4/5] - I loved it when it first came out and I still kinda have some feelings for this track, despite how overplayed it was... Drake does a nice job with the hook and even though they can be cheesy, Wayne delivers some good lyrics. The storytelling is pretty nice and I really do enjoy the production. For some reason, even though I like this track better, this track reminds me of Comfortable. Even though Drake isn't a full R&B singer, he has R&B songs. So I consider this to be C4's Comfortable, and oddly enough, I like this more than Comfortable.
C3 Mirror Track: Comfortable
07 - How to Hate (Feat. T. Pain) [1/5] - The bullshit just hit the fan and splattered over everything... Honestly Wayne... How to Love already sucks enough... Did we need this horrible counterpart? There's just too much hook and bull in this track... And even though I hate Got Money, I enjoy it more than this... This track is just boring and lazy... Got Money was atleast kinda catchy...
C3 Mirror Track: Got Money
08 - Interlude (Tech N9ne & Andre 3000) [5/5] - A track without Wayne on it? Well, I may hate the new Lil Wayne, with a passion, but atleast he has some kind of smart. If he's going to put great MCs on a track, he should stay away. Maybe Da Drought 3, Dedication 2, Carter I, or Suffix Lil Wayne would be great on this track, but not this nigga.
Anywho, this track is great. Tech N9ne delivered an amazing verse and so did 3K.
C3 Mirror Track: None
09 - John (Feat. Rick Ross) [1.5/5] - Damn Wayne, how much swearing can you do? To be honest, this song should not have been a single. Way too much cussing, not much originality (this is pretty much a remake of Ross's I'm Not a Star) and Ross kinda murked Wayne, i'm gonna be honest.
10 - Abortion [2.5/5] - While most won't agree with me, I actually kinda like this track. It would have a WAY higher rating if Wayne wouldn't have fooled us with the title.
The punchlines are good and I really do enjoy the production. The hook is kinda cheesy, but so is Phone Home's hook, so I think they're alike in that way. Also, I love the production in both tracks.
C3 Mirror Track: Phone Home
11 - So Special (Feat. John Legend) [2/5] - Wow... This track had potential. It had John Legend in it and I think the production is good, but Wayne's punchlines and him trying to be romantic are so cheesy... Some are good, but overall, this track isn't anything all that memorable for me. This track reminds me of Mrs. Officer, probably because they're both cheesy love songs.
C3 Mirror Track: Mrs. Officer
12 - How to Love [1.5/5] - Oh you niggas always make me laugh. You say you hate Lil Wayne for singing, right? Lil Wayne's a little bitch for singing, isn't he? Wh-what, what's that, your favorite album is Tha Carter III? And what was that lead shitty ass single that he chose for that album, Lollipop, hm...
What does Lollipop have to do with this bullshit? Oh yeah, he's being a bitch and singing AGAIN! Which is why I dislike this track. It has a point above Lollipop for having good meaning, but it's too hooky, too poppy, and makes Wayne seem like a complete fucking joke, just like Lollipop, minus the good meaning. Wayne isn't a good singer and to top it off, his flow hasn't been godly since 07, so why make another pop hit? Damnit Wayne, you're making it really hard to defend you from everyone who hates ya...
C3 Mirror Track: Shittypop (Lollipoop)
13 - President Carter [5/5] - My favorite track on this album, right above 6'7". This track had a 4 out of 5 because his punchlines get kinda awkward, but the speech at the end makes it a perfect 5. Really, the only classic off this album, IMO.
C3 Mirror Track: Dr. Carter (Derr)
14 - It's Good (Feat. Jadakiss & Drake) [2.5/5] - One of the better tracks on the album, but nothing groundbreaking. It's been a while since I heard Jadakiss, so it was interesting to see him here. Drake was trying to cop dat old Weezy flow, but ended up sounding kinda meh... Wayne's punchlines were a little too cheesy at points, but he did an okay job. But, at this point, i'm just glad to see the album is almost done. This track was supposed to be a diss towards Jay Z, so I have to consider it the mirror track to Mr. Carter from C3. Mr. Carter is a classic song and is not a Jay Z diss, but both tracks have to do with Jay Z and are the only tracks on both albums that have to do with him, so that's my decision.
C3 Mirror Track: Mr. Carter
15 - Outro (Bun B, NAS, Shyne & Busta Rhymes) [4.5/5] - Man, it's been a while since i've heard Bun B. I haven't had any interest in him since Pimp C died D: but he had a great verse to open up this last track, then... He came... Nas made this song the best, but then... Shyne came... That nigga is so overrated... He KINDA sounded like Biggie, but I don't think his Shyne album is classic. Thankfully, Busta saves the song, but says a horrible line at the end... Busta... This album is far from classic... It's light years from touching C3 and I thought that album was bullshit too.
C3 Mirror Track: None
Well, I should be done, but I have to review the damn bonus tracks... Thanks @breezy214
Bonus Tracks (Ugh...) -
16 - I Like The View [2.5/5] - Not a completely horrible track. It has good production and OK punchlines. It's really not anything that memorable, IMO.
17 - Mirror (Feat. Bruno Mars) [4/5] - Meh... I know you guys are going to hate me for this, but this track is overrated. Not as overrated as Lollipoop or How to Die, but it's still very overrated. It's a good song, not Wayne's best. It's a little too hooky for me, but that's the only flaw. Not the best track on C4, but one of the better ones.
18 - Two Shots [1.5/5] - "I could probably do better, but probably is like never" That line alone summarizes Wayne's career after 2007. Wayne can be the best rapper alive, but what does he do? Dumbs down for the mainstream and does pop, just like a typical sellout rapper. Anywho, this track is bad. The production is good, but Wayne's delivery and punchlines are boring...
19 - Up Up and Away [3.5/5] - I like the energy, delivery, some of the punchlines, and the production, but the hook gets annoying towards the end of the song... It's pretty creative, but like I said, the hook gets unbearable at the end. Not a horrible track, but nothing special.
20 - Novacane (Feat. Kevin Rudolf) [4/5] - IMO, this track is better than Mirror. It has some good storytelling about Wayne's addiction and nice production. If all Wayne crossover tracks could be like this, instead of like Lollipoop, then I would have no problems.
21 - I Got Some Money On Me (Feat. Birdman) [2/5] - I'm not really feeling this track... It's just too... Meh... It's just that same ol' same ol' and at this point, it's a bit boring.
Best Tracks:
1. President Carter
2. 6'7"
3. She Will
4. Blunt Blowin
5. Abortion
Best Bonus Track:
1. Novacane
Overall: [42.5/70] [2 Mics out of 5] ...
Wow, it amazes me that you guys think the real Carter III is the goat and you hate this album... Shame shame shame... C4 is pretty much a shittier version of C3, nothing more. Some tracks are original and some concepts are good, but it could've been a lot better without the wack punchlines and Wayne's weak delivery on some tracks. I hate both this album and C3, both have special places in my trash xD
But, the verdict is, if you hate this album and love C3, then what's wrong with you? Wayne's almost as lyrically dumbed down on C3 as he's lyrically dumbed down on this album. I don't see why you guys aren't calling this album the goat. Me personally, I think this album is bullshit. It's lyrically retarded, unoriginal, and too mainstream. I also hated C3, but for different reasons. That album was lyrically retarded, too poppy/mainstream and it was a disappointment. I didn't expect a lot out of C4 after I heard How to Love, which I hate.
I knew this album was going to be mainstream, but it was way too mainstream for my taste...
Now, that's my opinion. I'm done reviewing Wayne albums. I'd like to move on and do reviews that aren't Lil Wayne albums. Or do what's been very highly requested and do mixtapes. Whatever you guys want, I'll try to do. But, i'd rather do requested reviews than random mixtapes because Wayne has too many for me to review...
