How Lil Wayne Can Make 'Tha Carter V' A Success | Vibe
According to Drake, we won't have to wait much longer for Lil Wayne to release his next album, Tha Carter V. On Friday night, Drake helped kick off NBA All-Star Weekend in New Orleans by performing at the House of Blues and dropped a bomb on those in attendance by announcing a release date for Wayne's new project. "If you wanna hear Lil Wayne at his best," he said, "if you wanna hear Young Money at they best…Carter V, May 5th. Just know we about this shit, for real."
Young Money hasn't confirmed or denied May 5 as the release date for Carter V just yet. But Drake announced it, so of course there's some validity to it. Assuming that it is, there are some things we want Wayne to keep in mind as he puts it together. Here's what he needs to do to make Tha Carter V a success.
#1. Spend some time—a lot of time—listening to Tha Carter II and Tha Carter III, as well as the early Dedication mixtapes.
We sometimes wonder if Wayne listens to his old music. We're all for growth. But Wayne could benefit from self-research. He used to sound so hungry, so alive and so unwilling to lose on every song. That fire and passion is missing from a lot of his newer stuff. Listening to his mid-to-late 2000s tracks could help him recapture whatever he was feeling back then.
#2. Avoid singing, playing the guitar or doing anything other than simply rapping.
Why doesn't Wayne seem to understand that the only thing we want to hear him do is rap his ass off? We appreciate that he's taken an interest in other musical activities. But on Tha Carter IV and even I Am Not a Human Being II, he spent too much time on other things. On Carter V, we hope he leaves those in the backseat.
#3. Limit the number of guest appearances.
I Am Not a Human Being II was jam-packed with guest appearances. From Soulja Boy and 2 Chainz to Juicy J and 2 Chainz (again!), the album featured 12 guest appearances on 15 songs. Why, Wayne, WHY? You don't need all that help.
#4. Limit the number of Young Money artists who make guest appearances.
When Drake revealed that Carter V will drop on May 5, he used the phrase "if you wanna hear Young Money at they best…" We'll assume he was referring to the fact that the Young Money leader will be making his return on the album. If not, let us say this: We're good on verses from guys like Tyga, Gudda Gudda, and, hell, even Drake. Let those guys rap on their own projects, Wayne.
#5. Find a way to incorporate more Bangladesh beats into the mix.
Wayne recorded "A Milli" and "6 Foot, 7 Foot" with Bangladesh. Both were huge records. So why the hell hasn't he worked with Bangladesh more? We know there've been financial issues in the past, but it seems silly for those two not to get into the studio together for Carter V, especially considering their history.
#6. Record, record, record…and then record some more.
Wayne flourishes when he locks himself in the studio for days at a time and records a ton of music. A few years ago, it felt like he was knocking out a dozen songs a day. We imagine he's slowed down since then—keeping up that pace would have been damn-near impossible—but for Tha Carter V, he needs to go extra hard. We want to hear him talking about recording 200 songs for the album and then whittling it down to the best of the best for the finished product.
#7. Try to sound like rapping is still fun.
Our biggest complaint about Wayne's recent music is that it doesn't sound like he's having a great time rapping anymore. He's still proficient, but at times on Tha Carter IV and I Am Not a Human Being 2, he sounded like he was going through the motions. Maybe Wayne needs to add a skit or two to show off his personality on Carter V. Or change his overall approach to making music. Whatever it is, we want to hear him taking risks and pushing himself. It's the only way he's going to make it the best Carter yet.
