When you look at Wayne's career, this was the most important and critical album for him and Cash Money Records. Wayne's first release post-Hot Boys era (500 Degreez) wasn't a commercial success, and Cash Money didn't have much of a supporting cast to compliment Wayne.
It was this album that made a ton of rappers want to be associated with Wayne and have him featured on their song (Destiny's Child 'Soldier' Track doesn't happen for Weezy if Tha Carter wasn't a success).
Also, CMR REALLLY needed this album to be a hit and for Wayne to become more than a Louisiana/Dirty South rapper.
Tha Carter III was the most successful and career-altering release by Wayne, but he doesn't even get to that point if Tha Carter I flops.

yea and I think that's why most people mix it up with thinking this was his first album when he had 3 other albums before this.
