  • NC2 is not lyrically "worse" than NC1, but they have very different styles. Wayne rhymes very differently nowadays. Really, the only couple of tracks that are even remotely related in style to NC1 (or to his older style in general) are My Name Is, Back 2 Back and that's pretty much it. Instead, we get the new Wayne's take on today's hottest flows - as we always get on a Wayne tape. I don't see why this is so difficult for people.

I am an old school Wayne fan first and foremost (2006-2009 for me) but in 2014-2015 Wayne has really gotten back on his game, rap-wise. Most people don't understand how good he is actually rapping right now!! I don't think it's a case of Wayne not being *able* to rap like he did on NC1; I think it's more a case of that particular style not being popular anymore, so Wayne has re-tooled his flow and lyrics to fit better with the hot beats of this age, and the actual subject matter people rap about.

I suggested that Wayne 2015 Challenge last week because I feel like: if wayne raps over pre-2005 or even pre-2010 beats *only* then it'll not only be dope for us fans to hear that old flow back for a full tape, but it would also build hype for C5 and silence those haters and critics who think Wayne is incapable of rapping that way anymore.

    - - - Updated - - -

I also really want to point something out here: IMO, Wayne did not simply switch up his style and automatically become as skilled as he used to be; this was a long, hard journey. This "new" flow I speak of is something that Wayne was doing back in IANAHB2 days (even as early as D4) and he was NOT doing it well. There is a gigantic margin of lameness in rap lyrics and the fact that Wayne has the good sense to know what makes a dope line and what does not... well, that is more difficult than most people give him credit for. Take the song like "Moment", which I know most of you love, but I never cared for it. I consider that to be a song where Wayne did not yet fine tune his lyrics. If you actually listen to what he's saying and how he's saying it, then compare it to what he's doing in 2015 you'll hear a huge leap in quality. I don't consider that song to be as bad as "Krazy", which (aside from a few bars) was another perfect example of Wayne doing this "new" flow, but not yet having harnessed its potential.

I always say that. And I'm an oldschool lilweezyana drought 3 dedication 2 carter 2 etc wayne fan. If I say the motherfucker is rapping good, then he is lol. I think people actually dont get his raps..

and FACTS on the flow segment. I remember when he was creating this new flow of his back in D4.. it was wack to me. Even agreed on "moment"

        • The tape gets better with time, thats for sure. If you observe and give all tracks individually attention you'll hear what wayne did to them beats. Now we looking at like thats the worst song, and thats the best song. Ignore the remakes and for some of you, ignore the autotune where its too much. And you'll see how wayne murdered every song lyric, flow, metaphor and each kinda wise.

lol that's how I feel bro: if any mf gonna know if wayne rapping good, it'd be ME!

Good Wayne and Bad Wayne often comes back to a couple of key things: #1 – is he talking too much about his dick and making childish pussy jokes?#2 – are his jokes and wordplay consistently clever to the point that almost every line could stand on its own as a quote or rewind-worthy moment?#3 – is he hampering the raps with too much disconnected thought?

This last one is maybe the most important/obvious when I’m feeling (or not feeling) Wayne music. What I mean is:a song like “Moment” or “Krazy” is filled with so many bars that are just random thoughts without any kind of lead-up or conclusion. Take the opening lines of Krazy, that whole “my niggas slipping like bar soap…. Torso” crap. Those are all just corny-ass random lines – not funny, not clever. They mean almost nothing. But then he gets to a mediocre line like the Martin Luther King line and it’s an actual complete thought!!That’s why people love that line so much… and that ain’t even a tenth as dope as his best shit.Think about all the best Wayne verses… even if he’s just bragging about his sexual prowess or drug intake he’s doing it in a way that’s like a story in itself.

And regarding the pussy talk… when people say “Wayne always rapped about pussy a lot!”I respond with “Yes, but it was CLEVER back in the day!”Like on D2 when he has those bars about going down like the stock exchange and leaving her soaked from her ankle up, etc.THAT SHIT WAS FIRE!!Did Wayne ever have a complete thought like that – or such vivid imagery – during 2011-13???Not that I heard!

So anyway, it’s like something clicked in Wayne’s head around D5 and he began showing more signs of brilliance again.I’ve said it before: most of D5 ain’t for me, but the cuts that are for me are really fucking good (CREAM, fuckin problems, you song, levels) and in those he keeps the lame shit to a minimum. After that, he started putting out some dope “C5 singles” (note the quotes) and features.

S4TW2 was important because it was (IMO) when he finally got the shit right. It was a mixtape of almost completely listenable, dope Wayne music.Sure, most of it was a new style, but it sounded GOOD AGAIN and he was RAPPING HARD and most importantly SMART!!!Follow that with FWA, which is his best overall work since C3, and then NC2, which is unique and amazing in its own right, and you’ve got a pretty definitive comeback if you ask me.

I have two Wayne tests to tell if music is good: #1: would I play it for someone who didn't know wayne to demonstrate his talent and rapping expertise? #2: if any given Wayne music was the first music he ever put out in his career, would he be considered a good rapper or a bad rapper? #3: if I put on C3 sessions or D2 or DD3 or C2-C3, does it make the new shit sound worse?

that last one is still pretty tricky even with Wayne's new golden age, lol, but like meat loaf said: two out of three ain't bad.

I meant "I have three Wayne tests", not two. This won't let me edit my post. Lol
