I love this convo, saw someone else post something similar before OG was released and I meant to respond but I have so much to say about this I never know where to start

What I loved about official C5 was that it showed Wayne as a human. I understand its hard for people to get amped about a largely depressing album especially when that is the total opposite of the persona and style of music that people love/expect. And I do prefer the overall energy and vibe of the OG songs. But I think the official is super real. Armor off, definitely less sexual...and that's special in a way this batch is not

I agree but that should not have been on carter v. Maybe an album called “Dwayne” realeased in 2025 after his career is on back burners. This is the greatest series in music history following one of the greatest careers in music history. This was supposed to be a victory lap. A one last hurrah for the greatest personalitie/personain music history. Like idk the OG one. Instead it tuned into a energy lacking, charisma absent album. I came for weezy

That form Good, if I Don’t She’s Mine, never Really Mattered, Scottie Pippen, My Niggaz weezy.

hit the nail on the head. I think there’s not a one of us here who doesn’t love a Wayne freestyle and lighthearted vibe (when done right!) But C5 was something bigger than that. It HAD to be. Even take a look at the OG versions of C5 songs that made the album like open letter, Mona Lisa, famous.. the lyrical upgrades were miles ahead of what they used to be. Take moral to the story: the bars he updated were basically all instances of him bemoaning his drug and sex addictions. At this point a lot of that goes without saying. He very cleverly made some mature and poetic choices on C5.

And of course you got ppl saying the originals were so much doper! Why, because they prefer hearing some throwaway bars about lean in the middle of an emotional outpouring? Give me a break. Why does Wayne have to forever be the goofball for YOUR respect, haters?

Lol. Nah it was the vocals on Mona Lisa that sounded cool. And it was just cool to see another version of it. And the flow. But yeah lyrically he made that and famous much better

I like appreciating C5 as the strong meaningful work it was meant to be. I now appreciate its outtakes as a very good mixtape containing some of his dopest songs in recent history.

And youre right though: Wayne did want a double disc CD. But you and everyone else forget something when you hate on Mack Maine all the time. It was MACK who wanted to make C5 official a double volume album? Remember that? How quickly we forget! In 2018 it was WAYNE who insisted C5 be a single album.

So this flies against all the “Wayne doesn’t control his own fate” arguments AS WELL AS the “Mack is destroying Wayne’s career” arguments. Tez may be fucking clueless, I’ll give y’all that!! Lol. But Mack was out there recording waynes mama, setting up features, fine tuning production, and creating the vision for C5 that made it a classic — whether you realize yet that it is, or not, it is most certainly that.

Had wayne put out a bunch of catchy but valid tracks it would been critically lambasted as usual — no matter how much WE liked it. They wanted a hit. They wanted a classic. They wanted a statement. And they made it.

But for the record: my guess is that Mack wanted one seriously volume and one loose party volume. Wayne nixed it. so songs like Scottie Pippen, etc never saw the light of day as official C5 tracks.

Think about what Wayne managed to do against all historical odds: He made the dreaded “mature rapper” album, but did it so it was still hard enough and funny enough to be vibrant and relevant. He pulled it off. And mack’s involvement in that shit was crucial. Imagine having to sift through thousands of Wayne songs to find just the right ones — and then actually accomplishing the perfect balance to pull off their goal!! (Not YOUR goal; their goal)

I fuck with all the tracks he could have dropped a 3 disc that you gotta purchase separately like e40 did and I'd still cop.

I feel you, I love Weezy, I love a number of these OG songs, I want to see that charisma and victory lap also. I think though that with all he has been through it would have been weird for official C5 to be like that, it makes sense it was more complex. I think we as fans have to appreciate the greatness in all sides of Wayne. And I say this shit about IANAHB2 even, I still love a lot of his peppier songs that are shallow rapping and littered with sexual references.

If I am being honest, a decent amount of this OG C5, including some of the songs I really like, is closer to an IANAHB feel to me than a Carter feel (with the exception of LOMC, SP and some others). And because I actually like the IANAHBs I don't mean that as an insult just a statement on the vibe I personally get. I really think the official C5 is more appropriate Carter material because its deeper, I guess its that simple for me.

I also do strongly feel a theme and takeaway of official C5 is triumph over adversity. That is the clear message of Let it All Work Out, Cant be Broken, Dope New Gospel and I am sure I am forgetting others. I think its powerful that the same Wayne can expose the I got humbled and hurt and I'm tired stuff and the suicide stuff and have fans like crying in their keyboards and have the album still do numbers even though it didn't have bangers in the traditional sense. "That's power yes" just more subtle IMO
