No announcement yet.
Has Wayne hurt his legacy by not retiring after C5 as he claimed he would?

edit: yeah deluxe sold under ten but that only goes to show that most people don't really care about Funeral. It's great at times but ultimately a messy album.

wayne is supposed to be on Kanye and Em's level. Both sold 200K+ first week in late 2019/2020 and went gold easily. Even Jay Z's last solo album did 200K+. Wayne did 140 and is barely scraping his way to 400K. Its only July and it's already not a top 10 debut.
And albums which sold much less first week have caught up and outsold Funeral. For example,
Funeral did 139K first week and has sold less than 460K in 6 months (probably around 400K).
Gunna did 111K first week and has sold 461K in 2 1/2 months.
DaBaby did 124K first week and has sold 702K in 3 1/2 months.
MoneyBagg Yo did 66K first week and has sold 521K in 7 months.
Rodwave did 72K first week and has sold 462K in 4 months.
Megan Thee Stallion did 41K first week and has sold 520K in 5 months.
A-Boogie did 120K first week and has sold 600K in 6 months.
This is Wayne's first album since C1 to not produce a Platinum single.
His first album since C2 to not produce a top 20 charting single.
His first album ever to potentially not even go Gold.
(not including FWA)
this album flopped miserably. Especially for someone of wayne's level

it is wayne's first album since C1 to not have a single song atleast go platinum
and first since C2 to not have atleast one song go top 20.
and possibly his first album ever not to go atleast Gold
this album flopped miserably. Especially for someone of wayne's level

he's rapping above average
he needs to pay more attention to song structure. More effort into catchy hooks. Catchy hooks create hit songs, hit songs generate sales. A song that was well structured for example was Dreams.
Also needs better delivery/cadence. Also needs to listen to what's out right now and what artists are hot. And work with them rather than fucking OT Genesis. Also more variety. There were 4 songs with chorus's about balling - Harden (great song of course), Wild Dogs (bitch Ima ball and ...), Bing James, Ball Hard (cmon. This hook was lazy as fuck)
Id like Wayne to get off his high horse and listen to what artists are putting out today. Maybe draw some inspiration from it to make stuff that sounds relevant to today's sound. Idk, he may of tried to do that with Funeral, but if he did it feels like he was going off what Mack would of said "is hot today".
also push the right songs at the right times.
When the album dropped they tried to push I Do It (good choice) and Ball Hard. They tried to create a "#BallHardChallenge" on Thriller which failed miserably. First of all, Ball Hard chorus is just confusing. And a challenge on Thriller I understand Wayne has a partnership with them but that's not where songs get hot. Pushing "I Don't Sleep" at that point and on Tiktok would of been great. The song is catchy, I can see dances being created to it and would be on a relevant platform while the song is still fresh.
But nope they drop a animated music video months later and follow it up with a 2 in 1 skatepark video for 2 other songs.
And then they drop the deluxe with no announcement at 8PM, letting it get outsold by fucking G-Herbo of all people. Like how hard is it to announce the day before so the rap IG pages post about it And last week they sent Shimmy to radio. In the middle of the BLM movement and while Doja has been "cancelled". Like come the fuck on. You have a collab with one of the hottest rappers this year - Uzi - that you could easily push but you choose one with someone who is hated right now.
At the end of the day, alot of the songs on Funeral were one and done. Didn't feel propelled to go back and listen after first listen to alot of the songs. And I'm sure many others felt this way - hence the sinking sales.
Also the album received a luke warm response overall. General consensus is that it is a C-C+ album. KTT (mentioning it because you brought it up) gave it a 67/100

I agree album got luke warm response 6.5/10 isnt bad but theres always room for improvement. Honestly just changing some of the feats would make album better. Also hes farther away from commercial peak so he has to put out better bodies of work compared to ianahb2 days.Don't get too high to look over blessings
