Lil Wayne’s long-time manager Cortez Bryant spoke to Andrew Barber of Fake Shore Drive for a lengthy interview, and he recalled how upset Lil Wayne once was when he realized he made a mistake on one lyric. Byrant had pressed up thousands of copies of a mixtape and uploaded it online, only for Wayne to realize a lyrical error he wanted to fix, but it was too late.
“The word starts with ph, but he said f, right?” said Bryant, who was unsure of the exact lyric until Barber pointed it out. “He was like, ‘Oh sh-t, I gotta change that.’ We released it. We had an argument about that. He not understanding the concept about digital, and it’s gone now…We had pressed tons of CDs, but he didn’t realize he spelled it wrong, and I didn’t catch it.”
Byrant is most likely thinking of the 2009 song “Yes” which appeared on multiple mixtapes. One of Lil Wayne’s signature phrases is, “Weezy F. Baby and the F is for…”
Despite the error, Bryant noted that how the incident reflected Wayne’s dedication to his craft.
“Wayne is a perfectionist about that, using his words and prepositions in [the] correct way,” explained Bryant. “He might misspell something on purpose for lyrical exercise and wordplay, but he’s really precise about his wordplay. He was really down, pissed, ‘F-ck the whole mixtape’ just because of that one damn line.”
Elsewhere in the interview, Bryant said they are working on bringing all of Wayne’s mixtapes to streaming services.
