We all know wayne is a major trend setter in his own right but the man is also very susceptible to falling for trends himself-even when it may not benefit him or his sound in any way.
Earlier in Waynes career he was a product of his environment
hot boy/C1 Wayne was influenced heavily by NO sound
C2 WAYNE/EARLY C3 SESSIONS was heavily Dipset influenced which was perfectly understandable due to him being pretty early on his career and still developing his own sound
We therefore all acknowledge D2->C4 wayne as his very best and was when he was his most authentic self this is also where most of the magic happened in regards to setting the trends and sounds that paradigm shifted the entire genre to what it is today.
Another great set of years i would identify between 2014-2018 where again Wayne was in his own zone making music that was raw and authentic TO HIMSELF (D5, mixtape run, FWA, C5. OG CV etc) which gave us some of his very best work on the later half of his career.
When we see Wayne fall victim to some of the trends that dominate a certain era of hiphop it evidently diminishes the quality of the music that he makes i think the most clearest example of this is D4-IANAHB2 during this era Wayne fell trap to the trend at the time which was the Odd Future hype.
Funnily enough i pointed this out in a very juvenile way way back then and was met with quite a lot of hate

i was made to look a fool until Wayne admitted years later that he was indeed influenced by odd future and in particular Tylers very raw and unfiltered way of rapping.

Which i mean if u had two brain cells to rub together you would work that out but thats neither here or there its evident then that when Wayne isn't being his authentic self but is instead trying to fit or mould to a particular sound we get some of his worst music as evidenced within D4/IANAHB2 the masses would agree that these projects aren't his best and lot of people would unanimously agree in saying that they are his very worst album/tape to date there was also a minor 2 Chainz influence in the sound then as well but i do think it was overwhelmingly the case that odd future was moulding the Wayne of the era from his clothing style to his raps.
So that brings me to Funeral no denying Wayne is making it more and more known that he does indeed listen to the new gen and that his "keeping" an ear out for sounds, which it seems is precisely the issue Wayne is attempting to mould to the new age and make "trap" influenced music either in the vein of lil baby, uzi and others and it simply doesn't work.
Waynes susceptibility of falling for trends is yet again having a detrimental effect on the quality of the music that he is putting out and recording. Every-bodies favourite songs on funeral were the ones where he was authentic to his sound the worst songs are ones where he is being someone he isn't or playing catch up with a certain trend, you don't hear Kanye, Jay-Z, Eminem, Nas and other established GOATS doing this (OUTSIDE OF A FEW SONGS OR A LOOSIE)
so why is Wayne? especially since he is such a trend setter himself and has already established his own sounds up to this point why does he feel the need to play catch up at all? is it mack maines track choices? is it waynes personal artistic direction?
either way it has been and always will be the detriment of Wayne's overall catalogue
