If you look at just this month (November 2020), it's #1 obviously but the crazy thing is the #2 mixtape this month has only 112k streams. 1.3 million down to the number 2 spot having only 112k. There were brand new OFFICIAL mixtape releases this month from Jeezy, 2 Chains, Future, Meek Mill, French Montana and others that didn't even hit 100k streams.

And people talk about Wayne being irrelevant. That's ridiculous. Just look at the numbers.
This was a benefit of not allowing downloads also

      You talking about
      The Recession 2
      So Help Me God
      Pluto x Baby Pluto
      Quarantine Pack
      Coke Boys 5

They are not mixtapes. They are all commercial releases. DatPiff just hosts them as well. All of those are on Spotify, Apple Music and all the other DSP's. They have no DatPiff plays because everyone is listening elsewhere.

1.3 M free streams translates to 346 album units (3750 free streams = 1 album) - granted I don't know if Datpiff's listens are per song. Regardless, the numbers aren't particularly impressive.

      • Even so, he's untouchable on that platform. In TWO DAYS he has more streams than the next ten mixtapes/albums/lps combined on that platform from the whole month. Sure no comparison is perfect, but you say those are available on other platforms; well, NC3 was simultaneously released on youtube and has over a half million plays just on whole-mixtape video. Five of the top 10 all time are Wayne. He is the all time mixtape king and he's not slowing down. His most popular mixtape is Dedication 6. Not 2, not 3, not 4, not 5, not No Ceilings 1, but his MOST RECENT Dedication release.

And none of that even really matters except to refute people who say he's "irrelevant." What matters more is the quality of the work, which, if you apply any STANDARDS to judging quality, is also IMPROVING over time. It's so tiresome to hear "old wayne was better" "i like old wayne best." Okay, you do you. But if you actually look into ways we can rationally evaluate quality, you move up from just what tickles your own toes to something that can be broken down with less arbitrary, more reasoned analysis like: length of rhyme, density of puns, density of allusions, interconnectedness and interdependence of meaning, metaphors, etc etc.

By those STANDARDS, Wayne is as good as ever and in some ways better than ever. If your personal nostalgia or your 3rd left toe feel something more for an old album, cool. But if you want to say he "is" better/worse, you then move into a burden of defending that claim with sharable standards, not jsut personal taste.

By sharable standards that can be analysed and shown, NC3 is absolutely fantastic.

look as much as i love Wayne's more technical rapping and use of rhymes in these past few years prime Wayne has the coolest flow, voice, delivery and look of all time. Dude i was listening to Damn I'm Cold and Duffle Bag Boy yesterday, the way he sounds is AMAZING it's like you are listening to the greatest thing ever. There was something to prime Wayne that was REALLY SPECIAL and new Wayne just doesn't have it. I still appreciate his music now of course, but prime Wayne is not from this world

                      • Since there are 3 artcovers.

Do you also think there is going to be a part C as well?

Part B better be more mature deep songs. I like that for my autumn/winter mood.

"I just got ghosted, hit a man with a GUSTOOOO"

                        • That's your taste and that's fine, but if he kept doing that for 20 years he'd be a one-trick pony. Yawn.

That said, kind of interesting he revived some of his old taglines from the period you mention on NC3 like "please say the baby" "best rapper alive" etc.

He's close to the style you like on Mahogany and Stop Playin With Me and the verses (not hooks) on Wayne's World and then ads a dozen other styles to that on the rest of the album. Isn't that amazing?

Piano Trap came out a few months ago and it sounds like a decades old classic already. Isn't that amazing?
