  • So why are there so many Weezy leaks? (esp. regarding the Empire)

Recently (and thanks to a board member here who wrote the Bible... although God was more about floods than droughts) I've been able to check out some Carter 3 outtakes. And... as you guys know, there are a FUCKLOAD of them. ('Something You Forgot' is just... jesus christ.)

As far as I can tell, Wayne didn't sanction any of this, the way some artists allegedly leak their own music on purpose. Which almost makes it feel weird, listening to especially some of the more personal songs like the one above; for all I know he kept it off for a reason and didn't intend anyone to hear it. It's so good though, and god knows people have bootlegged artists to death before they finally open up the vaults.

My question though, basically is like, how do so many people apparently have access to Weezy's shit? I mean, this Empire dude managed to release, what, 6 (!!!) unauthorized mixtapes within like a year. The RateYourMusic site lists 169 Wayne bootlegs, and that's probably not even close to the real number of unofficial tapes.

Is there like a friend of Wayne's who puts on a fake moustache and goes online to leak shit? Then there's this other dude who's always like 'Weezy I told you to make the safe combination something other than 6969!!!'

It's a strange situation. There have been many heavily-bootlegged artists, but I'm not sure I can think of another one with the sheer amount of leaks this guy has. And of course, it's given us some great music that's up there with his official best. If/when he starts doing archival/official outtake releases... that's gonna be interesting.

The leaks are from several sources, u already got some good answers. But one of them was Kidd Kidd, you can hear Wayne talk about this on rule 1 from this Dedication 3 skit:

I'm not sure if he was just leaking his collabos with Wayne or if it was other stuff too. The album song Wayne talking about is Mrs Officer from Carter 3.

Omarion also got kicked off YM for leaking 'I Get It In'.

Adding on to what Mnjaro/WeezyFan mentioned, Omarion also leaked songs with Wayne while he was on YM, which lead to him being dropped (Comfort, OG Bedrock and I think there was one more)

Negligence by the artist (ex. CD in car), hackers, smaller featured artists looking for a break the main 3 ways songs leak really

thank you all for the answers

it feels a bit invasive to listen to some of the songs like 'something you forgot' if he really didn't want to release it... but on the other hand, it's so damn good. what a quandary

but i listen to tons of bootlegs so i'd be kind of hypocritical if i made an arbitrary line in the sand... the only thing off the top of my head i feel truly weird hearing is that one song Eminem made after Proof died, which is just so raw and full of grief, and so obviously unfinished and not meant for people to hear... that type of thing genuinely feels like invading someone's privacy
