Today’s music has a lack of creativity. Everyone sounds the same and their lyrics are the same as their competiton's. There is one artist who stands out from the rest of the competition; Dewayne Michael Carter J.R, who is mainly known as his stage name, Lil’ Wayne. He got his first record deal at the age of thirteen and has been a lyrical monster ever since. "Tha Carter Three", his latest album, sold over a million copies in it's first week, breaking the record for most albums sold in a week. I believe Lil’ Wayne is the best rapper alive because he started rapping at a younger age then most artist out today, his lyrics don’t even compare to his competition, and he is in it for his fans.

Lil’ Wayne was competing in rap battles at the tender age of ten. The older kids would under estimate him because of his age, but when it was his turn to take the stage, he would rap about the same things they rapped about, and make it better. When Wayne was rapping on the street one day, Brian Williams (widely known by his stage name 'Birdman'), a local record label owner, heard him rapping and knew that Wayne had potential. As of that day, Birdman has had Wayne by his side, and eventually, Wayne signed to Birdman’s record label, 'Cash Money Records'. At the age of fifteen Wayne had his first solo album -- and the rest is history.

Lyrics are a big part of hip hop. So what makes Wayne so different from the other artists that are out today? Lil’ Wayne has a song for just about every moment in a person’s life. He doesn’t just have songs that involves the "gangster" why of life, but he also raps about love, the loss of love, and even the birth of his own children. His vocabulary is at a higher level than most all rappers. When he has a spare moment, he likes to read a thesaurus and learn new words to incorporate in his songs. For example, he says "Lil’ Wayne in one word, immaculate". When I heard him say that, I had to look up the word so I could know what he was talking about. When you listen to his lyrics you really have to listen to what he is saying to catch the meaning of the song.

The main reason I believe Lil’ Wayne is the best rapper alive is because his motivation is his fans. He has put out a lot free music for his fans, because he knew that his fans wanted something new to listen to on a weekly basis. In the year 2007, he put out several mix tapes that contained fifteen to twenty songs, and they were free. Also, he said in an interview with VH1 that his favorite thing about being a music artist is seeing his fans' faces when he performs live for them. He also does not allow an album to be released until he has it full of songs he knows will affect his audience.

When Lil' Wayne retires from being a rapper, I think his name should be mentioned with the greats. He has worked hard to move from being on the streets rapping, to being at Madison Square Garden performing for more than 500,000 people. Wayne could be his own thesaurus because he never repeats a single word in one song. His fans are his heart when it comes to his musical career. Lil' Wayne is a trend setter, and more artists should be on his level -- or at least they should try!
