Not saying it's acceptable, but why is it so much worse than beating someone up physically?
Rape is just sex without consent. Sex is a perfectly normal act. So rape is essentially a normal act done without consent. However, there is nothing normal about getting beat up. Nobody consents to getting beat up, ever. But they do consent to sex.
