The hip-hop heavyweights' pre-teen offspring have formed their own band, OMG Girlz. In other news, Dr Dre and 50 Cent's sons form new rap group – WTF Boyz
Giving new meaning to the term "shorty", the pre-teen daughters of Lil Wayne and TI have formed a pop group. The pint-sized OMG Girlz have begun work on their debut album and hope to snag a verse from Lil Wayne before the rapper heads to jail.
OMG Girlz were conceived by Tameka "Tiny" Cottle, who was smitten with her daughter Zonnique's singing and dancing skills. Tiny then approached Lil Wayne's ex-wife, with whom she stars on reality TV show Tiny & Toya, to see if 10-year-old Reginae Carter might be interested in teaming up. "[Reginae] started rapping for me and I thought this would be great," Cottle told MTV.
Soon Reginae had become Baby Carter, 13-year-old Zonnique had become Star, and Tiny had recruited two more OMG Girlz – Bahja (13) and Lourdes Rodriguez (11), aka Beauty and Lolo. Tiny is managing the quartet, drawing on her experiences in 1990s girl group Xscape. "I don't want them to go through things I went through, so I tell them stories so we can avoid going in that direction," she said. They have already performed several live dates, performing dance routines in Day-Glo tights.
All of the OMG Girlz are signed up for Twitter, and they demonstrate a prodigious gift for 140-character gossip minutiae. "We are at the hair salon doing homework," they write. Or on yesterday's American Thanksgiving: "I want ya'll to try to come down to Turner Field and help feed the homeless. You should have confirmation and you have to be at least 12."
Cottle helped write TLC's 1998 hit No Scrubs and, although she is penning new songs for the Girlz, she also hopes to get the tweens themselves involved as songwriters. "We're trying to coach them to write, and they've come up with good stuff," she said. Baby Carter contributed to forthcoming single, Ain't Nobody, where she raps: "When I walk up in the spot, upgrades the room / And if you standin' next to me, I will upgrade you too." Lil Wayne has also promised at least one verse, as has TI, who is in jail on weapons charges.
"It's definitely music that's OK for kids," Cottle underlined. In other words – forget Rolls-Royce and Courvoisier, it's time to get some ponies and juice.
