Why not just make a thread where people can submit their names and their wanted new names? Like they'll put something like:

Current username: xxxxxxx
New username: xxxxxxx

That way, they can get the new name and you can still find out who was who. You can even make it like a Christmas type thing, have it last for a few days so people can change their name if they miss the first day or something. Just a thought though...
