  • Boi-1da Discusses The Making of 'Over'

After the success of "Best I Ever Had," and "Forever," it only makes sense for Drizzy Drake to hit up his go-to producer in order to craft the artist's most important single of the young star's career for Thank Me Later. The Source caught up with Boi-1da to talk about how the song came about and the producers' feelings on the early feedback of "Over."

Talk about how you went about creating the track “Over.”

Me and another producer by the name of Al-Khaaliq. He’s a dude that makes sample quality music that people think it’s a sample. Like “Over” sounds like a sample but it’s not a sample. I remember I was in L.A. in a meeting with Interscope and he sent it in my email. I put it in my headphones and I was like “Whoa, this is crazy I need to get on my laptop and get this working right now." I went right to the studio and just flipped it, that night. Once I sent it to Drake, the rest was history.

How did you know this was the joint to step out with for Thank Me Later.

That’s the way Drake envisioned himself coming out, it described exactly how he was feeling at this moment. You know, the first line, the hook, he comes out saying “I know way too many people in here that I didn’t no last year.” It’s explaining that his life, he has all these people around him now, but at the end of the day, he’s going to prevail, it’s not over yet. He has a lot more time to go, that’s what it is you know. He felt like this is the moment that he wanted to capture for his first single.

Where exactly were you when you first heard the joint drop?

It was crazy cause I was out to dinner with my family because my little cousin had a basketball game. He won the game, my little cousin DeShawn. And It was a finals game and his team won and it was a blowout, so we all went to celebrate. My phone kept ringing off the hook, but I didn’t check it because I was out to eat with my family, and then as I got out I went to drive my cousin home, and I flipped on the radio and I heard Drake talking on the radio. He had told me earlier that he was going to be on the radio, but I thought it was going to be later. Anyway, I heard him talking and the instrumental was playing in the background, and I was like ‘Ok!’ It was crazy, I went home and got on Twitter and the tweets were going crazy. I was like ‘yeah, that’s what I’m talkin’ about.’

Yeah the tweets were going crazy, and although a lot of the response was on the fence about the actual song, the general consensus was that the beat was bananas. Chase N Cashe from the Surf Club say that he never bites drums, but if he had to pick one he would bite Boi-1da’s. How do you feel when you hear things like that?

It’s real flattering because I look up to Chase as a producer. Him and Hitboy are two of the most certified…most realest dudes I’ve ever met within the music industry. But to hear something like that from my brother Chase it’s like inspiration and motivation to go further and go harder. Just to do even better and outdo myself anytime. It was crazy cause for Al-Khaaliq, this is the biggest thing he’s ever done. That’s my boy and I brought him on, we’ve always worked together for a long time, but we kind of stopped. Not cause we didn’t get a long or anything, but we got a little lost doing our own thing, but then we got back together and this is what happens.

What else could we expect from Thank Me Later and when can we hear more from the album?

Let me just say that the album is coming sooner than anyone can expect, when it’s just going to drop. It’s coming very soon, and it’s going to be very close to now. That’s all I’m going to say. And this isn’t it. I mean this “Over,” joint is dope but Thank Me Later as a whole, is probably…and I’m not being biased cause I worked on it…but from what I’ve heard it’s one of the greatest albums I’ve ever heard. I haven’t heard some songs, just because Drake’s been on the road and he’s still doing some recording. It’s just an album of Epic-ness.

It's expected to come out in May. But we could get it April. And it's a street single I'm not sure you can buy it and if you can I think Tuesday because that's when I heard iTunes updates with new Music.

That doesn't mean the song was good it just means that people wanted to hear the single. It's like when a mixtape drops. People don't download the mixtapes because it's hot, they download it so they can hear what's on it. The song compared to most of drake's music was somewhat horrible... It really caught me by surprise that his first single was weak like that,

Doin' what the fuck I want, Hate me all the fuck you want. Real niggas fuck wit' me and I don't give a fuck who don't.
