Author: admin | Filed under: Interview, Shanell, Your Music My World
We caught up with Young Money’s Shanell the other day to talk to the singer about her current mix tape release “Shut up N Listen” her individuality and more, so come to other side and get a taste of Shanell.
Alex: Hey Shanell how are you doing?
Shanell: I’m good how are you?
Alex: I’m good thank you taking the time out to let us interview you on your busy schedule
Shanell: No Problem.
Alex: So tell us why did you choose the name “Shut up n Listen for your new mix tape?
Shanell: Well My AKA is SNL and it kind of stands for Shut up N Listen and it just makes sense with the kind of music that I am doing I just want people to pay attention in learn something new whether you listen to just rock or alternative or R&b there other things on there for everybody to like and for everybody to learn to like.
Alex: That’s cool, how has the public response been toward your current mix tape release?
Shanell: It’s been great I think people are really surprised to just to hear the different types of music all kind of in one. I’m just really excited the downloads have been really good I’ve been getting great responses all the mix tape critics I guess you can call them (Laughs)
Alex: We know you’re not the typical R&B female artist For the new fans out there can you explain more about your musical style.
Shanell: Well it’s a combination of everything I ever listened to. I love R&B but I have so much more to say and so many different ways to say it that when I’m writing if I feel more “poppy” to express myself that day then it comes poppy if it’s more aggressive it might come out more Rocky I think just listening or doing one kind of music cuts yourself off from expressing yourself in a lot of different ways.
Alex: Who influences you when it comes to your music?
Shanell: You know when you hear one of those songs like an older song that you might hear in a restaurant and you know the words to it but you don’t know why you know it? It’s kind of like stuff I listened to when I was younger I don’t know who it is or how it is. You know people would tell me “that kind of sounds like Prince” I don’t do it on purpose it just kind of happens with my music. But who really influences me are the people that I work with, I work with some great producers and great artist and I have them on the mix tape Like Mika Means, Jovi Rockwell, Keys, Catalyst these are people that I work with everyday and we create music and they inspire me to be dope and to be different but the sound of it just happens and the people just take it and relate to it whoever they want to relate it to. It might sound Prince to you and Madonna ish to somebody else.
Alex: How does it feel being signed to young Money?
Shanell: How does it feel(Laughs) it’s a great family we all were on the road together for like a year in a half we all worked together in the studio and were all talented its different from a lot of label situations where you have other label mates and you might not talk to them or work with them or you don’t even know who they are but we move together and it shows, everybody’s talented everybody writes their own stuff everybody creates their own creative stuff nobody’s a puppet over there nobody’s coming up with their music or tells them what to wear and how to say this or do that were just all creative people and I think it shows in the success that young money has.
Alex: It does show we can see that big things are going to happen for everyone on the label you can really see that everybody’s really talented. What is it about “Shanell” that’s different from other singers?
Shanell: It depends I think I cross a lot of different lines I don’t like to be in one particular type of sound or music all the time to me that’s boring, People aren’t even like that. You might take a Beyonce CD and listen to it in the morning and take her CD out and listen to Lil Wayne
in the afternoon it’s like why can’t you get that kind of music on one CD and I think that’s what kind of sets me apart.
Alex: We all heard the rumor about you dating Wayne what’s the real situation between y’all two?
Shanell: We work together; I’m one of the many artist on Young Money that situation was a rumor that nobody at Young Money paid attention to and it just kind of continued to grow it went from me dating him to him getting serious and marrying me then from me being pregnant.
Alex: So for your debut album are you recording it now?
Shanell: I am I just wrapped up the mix tape and I’m trying to really push that but I am planning on starting for my album I’m not in any rush I think good music comes when you take your time and put it together if anything by this time next year I should have something album material to give to the world.
Alex: We know that you write music are you writing for any other artist now?
Shanell: I am actually I can tell you kind of she’s an R&B singer she’s new she has a great song that’s doing really well and she’s a part of a team that I worked with before and were working on some stuff and I’m really excited for her but I can’t tell yet.(laughs)
Alex: (Laughs) Okay, What else should we expect in the upcoming months
Shanell: I’m trying to hit everyone I can and push the mix tape I think I took my time and put together a bunch of songs for people and I want to make sure that they get it, I’m going to be doing some shows and working Shanell a lot of people haven’t seen what I can do so I’m trying to focus on me I have been working with the “Rebirth” album and the “Young Money” album and I haven’t had time to show people what I can really do. So that’s my focus right now getting Shut up N Listen around the world.
