Black Thoughts 2 Review
It doesn’t seem like a long time ago, but a while a back this kid was mixing the lime in the coconut and mixing it all up. Yeah… looking back I’m sure Tyga is laughing at himself as he now gloats in his success. Nowadays, Tyga is hanging with an all-star cast of rappers who have up til now made it into the mainstream spotlight in a very short amount of time. Though Tyga is not content with hanging in the shadows of Drake or Nicki Minaj and Black Thoughts 2 portrays some of his hunger to become more then a underground artist, or a parasite on the Young Money group. Where Black Thoughts fails is the consistency of decent content. When a deep song comes, another one comes exposing the fact that Tyga is not ready for the mainstream success.
The mixtape starts off with a bang with the epic lyrical content of Stefano Moses. This is where Tyga is at his best, unfortunately it’s just the start of a stuttered marathon. Here Tyga vents about several of the world’s issues. From the crime rate to what he believes Illuminati is. This is complemented by the spacey and slowed done Hypnotized. Here is where Tyga mesmerises the listener with his smooth rap flow . Which is where Tyga shines once again, it is still the beginning and if this is what is offered to us on Track 2 then what else is in store?
The mixtape then takes a turn for the worse as we get served up ‘We Up’ and ‘Don’t Wake me up’ which shows why Tyga is just not ready for super stardom. I’m not going to lie, when I first downloaded the tape I listened to the first 2 tracks fully. Once I got to these two, I heard a few bars and hit the skip. Why you ask? Well it was the same predictable Tyga flow that we have come to expect, nothing quote worthy unfortunately.
Black Thoughts 2 takes another turn (if it hadn’t already), and this is great. This is Tyga. Real or fake is exactly what people wanted to hear out of Tyga. His flow is on point with the beat and he sounds hungry as ever. It sounds like Tyga is not content in hiding in the shadows of his over successful and over achieving label mates. Tyga is not content with being a T-Streets or a Jae Millz. Unfortunately, a bad apple is waiting. I lose count of how many poured down Lil Wayne lines, Tyga steals on Bad Bitches. Wow, what can I say. I’m sure Tyga isn’t on Young Money to mooch off the success off Lil Wayne.
Fast forward a few tracks and we get to Reminded. This is fantastic and Tyga’s lyrical wordplay on this song is just genius and on point. The beat is very mellow and it’s something you can vibe nicely too. Over the last couple years, we have seen the emergence of quiet a few talented young rappers. XV, Los, Mac Miller, Yelawolf. I think Tyga can be added to the list.
Black Thoughts 2 in its whole sense shows the improvements Tyga has made. I still believe Tyga is his best when he is venting. When he starts spitting some of that real stuff and his flow is just straight up killer. Black Thoughts 2 is still very listenable and the project is very successful for Tyga. He is able to show what he can offer with an array of different types of songs. He has really captured the attention of a lot of listeners, though I still doubt that he can release an album in 2011. Whatever comes of Careless World, Black Thoughts 2 is a stepping stone. Another rung on the ladder.
I won’t go any further because the mixtape goes back and forth like this. This shows that Yes, Yes Tyga is improving. Can we bracket him in the same catergory as Wayne/Drake/Nicki? No
