Hey guys, posted this elsewhere just thought my OG YMHQ team might like a read.
With Drake getting as big as he is currently it comes as a surprise to me that they haven't collaborated more together, with Kanye arguably being one of the best musical ARTISTS of our time and Drake being one of the most promising MC's (MC meaning move the crowd) its becoming almost inevitable for them to work together. I'd like to propose a serious discussion on the joint force of these two incredibly artistic talented artists. Keeping in mind that these are from my personal view points, not necessarily the views of the collected mass of people.
Kanye- With the recent years it seems Kanye has made a shift from being a dope "rapper" into a talented artist, arguably one of the best of our time. While classic albums like College Dropout and Graduation were successful and recognized in their own right, Kanye's true talent has really shown through in the last few years. From the mini-movie of Runaway, to his successful (albeit possibly not the best received) release of MBDTF to his work with various other artists West's true talent has become the shining example for many an artist aiming to be successful music creators.
One of the things I'd like to touch on is the Kanye's meta-model of the world. I believe personality constructs and beliefs are what separate the music artists from the legends and with the maturing of Kanye and his music this is more relevant than ever. One of the greatest things I've seen thus far from Kanye is a press conference he had spoken at regarding the Taylor Swift incident, MTV, and commercial interest in general.
Kanye West speaks up! November 5th 2010 - YouTube
Hearing Kanye speak and offer his view is really an eye opener and gives a great insight on where his music comes from, which a lot of the time seems to be missed by most listeners not searching for the deeper meaning. With his ever growing maturity and experience with the world he seems to be formulating incredibly potent and realistic views on what it means to live in the world we do. These things often are often glimpsed in his music, a few specific examples...
New God Flow-
"Picture working so hard, and you can't cut through
That can mess up your whole life, like an uncle that touched you"
Artistic albeit narcissistic comparison to biblical text-
Did Moses not part the water with the cane?
Did strippers not make an ark when I made it rain?
Did Yeezy not get signed by Hov and Dame?
And ran to Jacob and made the new Jesus chains?
No Church In the Wild-
Two tattoos: one read "No Apologies"
The other said "Love is Cursed by Monogamy"
It’s something that the pastor don’t preach
It’s something that a teacher can’t teach
When we die the money we can’t keep
But we probably spend it all cause the pain ain’t cheap: preach
For sake of cohesiveness I'll leave the examples at that although there are many more to dig through, these are only a few.
The intriguing thing about lines like these are a lot of the times they are missed or not represented properly when they are taken at face value. Here is where I believe a problem with a lot of the dislike for Kanyes music lies. Although Kanye presents a very astute artistic mind, his lyrics often lack the straight-to-the-point-edness that many people need to be able to pick up on such vast insights into his model of the world.
Its also incredibly hard to dismiss the claims of those who believe Kanye to be overrated. While the challenge of always coming through with 10/10 verses/lyrics is something highly under appreciated Kanye at times does arguably drop the ball.
Runaway-
She find pictures in my e-mail
I sent this **** a picture of my ****
I don't know what it is with females
But I'm not too good with that ****
Marvin & Chardonnay
Hold up, talk to the, talk to the hand
****, you talking to a grown ass man
It’s like, way-way-way too much up in your pants
For us not to make the bed squeak (There goes the bed sheets)
Everybody rip the swag off 'fore I rip the tag off
Why my pants sag off? Cause I’m rapping my ass off
Etc. However all this being said, I think its almost inarguable that Kanye West is one of the greatest artists of our generation and possibly more to come. More on this later.
Enter Drake.
Sense the emergence on the scene is is irrefutable that Drake has been killing hiphop. While there are many lone haters out there still holding out for Drake to drop the ball, I think its safe to say that will not happen. If anything Drake has been "pressure cooked" into a great artist of our time. Increasing in range and talent year by year he stays steadily climbing the battle of making a permanent name for himself, coming off a Grammy win for best hip-hop album many anxiously await his upcoming album.
With Drakes step onto the scene skepticism was allotted and even understandable. Coming from a TV show and not living in the streets pushing drugs to get by his cred made it easy to write him off as a incompetent MC. However from that time Drake has done everything but give people solid ammo for their personal detest. From his unpredictable take off of SFG, to his freshman album TML Drake made a statement that hes here to stay, and very serious about his craft. Take Care is arguably the best body of word produced from Aubrey thus far.
The important staple I'd like to make about Drake is that foremost he is an incredibly constant artist. Its incredibly hard to find a less than stellar Drake line. Verse to verse, feature to feature, Drake carries an incredibly constant track record. While under comparison some lines may not stack up to others they do in their own right hold their own. Some worth noting examples..
Say Whats Real-
Like everybody passing through the studio
Is in character as if we acting out a movie role
Talking bull**** as if it was for you to know
And I don't have the heart to give these
**** ass niggas the cue to go
So they stick around kicking out feedback
And I entertain it as if I need that
Lord Knows-
They take the greats from the past and compare us
I wonder if they'd ever survive in this era
In a time where it's recreation
To pull all your skeletons out the closet like Halloween decorations
I know of all the things that I hear they be poking fun at
Never the flow though, they know I run that
**** you all, I claim that whenever
I change rap forever, the game back together
Light up-
I got these new rappers nervous: prom night nigga
I grow tired of these ****ing grown man liars
Storytellers, they ain't even need a campfire
But I just want to tell the truth
Before one of these haters load a couple shells and shoot
The entirety of Fear..
All in all its very hard to find a Drake lyric that isn't less than stellar.
Most of the hate generated towards Drake has to do with his "B****" attitude, or the popular guise that its "****" to show emotion. A quick listen to lord knows takes care of most of that argument however I will say Drakes meta-model of the world does seem to be one of emotion, often times a destructive amount of such. A letting go problem, wearing his heart on his sleeve, etc. While I don't necessarily agree with the notion these are bad frames to live under, I can understand the logic from someone who is uncomfortable with their own feelings, or doesn't operate under the same notion as showing emotion or embracing them as being good.
The comparison-
Under these assumptions its safe to say Kanye's prolific body of works solidifies him as not only an incredible artist but also philosopher of our time. With the views on the world, and his way of expressing these things through sound he creates within himself an incredibly force as far as being a voice of a generation. One I may be forward enough to say is quite a bit ahead of his time.
Drake, being a constant lyricist and embodying his personality and feelings in his work creates himself a vast amount of solid credible work. While it appears as if his views on the world may be less expansive and society concerned, he speaks on what he knows very well. His storytelling and embodiment of emotion create a quick rapport with those that share his views on how he lives his life.
I would like to discuss the incredible nature that a collaboration between the two would create. If I may be so forward as to label Watch the Throne as "awkward" due to my presupposition that it was during a time where Kanye was transitioning from "rapper" to "artist" I believe much more effective due would be Drake and Kanye. The combination of Kanyes meta-model, and Drakes no holds barred way of crafting verses I would assume would create a masterpiece. Something that would be remembered for generations to come, as well as setting an incredibly high bar as far as other artists looking to create artistic music themselves. The possibility of this coming to fruition? Anyone's guess.
