LOL. Commas are not for pauses. That is grammatically incorrect. Whoever taught you that in Australia should be fired; he or she is incorrectly educating the youth.

Yes, when reading it aloud you pause, but a pause cannot be a reason for a comma. For instance, if the sentence is "He has the highest grade in the class, but she is not far behind," you are pausing at the comma, but the reason you pause is because you are using a conjunction to separate to independent clauses.
