It could be down to many factors...

The sea water temp. has decreased rapidly over the years in some oceans, this causes stress on the fish and they die.
Disease
but the birds, I have no scientific explanation apart from maybe a disease

Also the earth is thousands of years over due on a magnetic field switch. AKA north pole switches with the south pole. May have something to do with it somehow..?
