  • The new Harry Potter HBO TV Series casts Harry, Ron and Hermione

HBO’s “Harry Potter” TV series has officially found its Harry, Ron and Hermione.

Dominic McLaughlin will play the role of Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton is Hermione Granger and Alastair Stout is Ron Weasley. More than 30,000 actors auditioned for the lead roles since HBO launched an open casting call last fall. Filming is expected to begin this summer.

“After an extraordinary search led by casting directors Lucy Bevan and Emily Brockmann, we are delighted to announce we have found our Harry, Hermione, and Ron. The talent of these three unique actors is wonderful to behold, and we cannot wait for the world to witness their magic together onscreen. We would like to thank all the tens of thousands of children who auditioned. It’s been a real pleasure to discover the plethora of young talent out there,” said showrunner Francesca Gardiner and executive producer and director Mark Mylod in a statement.

The “Harry Potter” roles launched Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint to worldwide fame in the early 2000s, and the HBO series could very well do the same for McLaughlin, Stanton and Stout, who are largely newcomers. McLaughlin acted in “Grow,” an upcoming comedy on Sky starring Nick Frost and Golda Rosheuvel, while Stanton starred as Matilda in “Matilda: The Musical” on the West End from 2023-2024. “Harry Potter” will be Stout’s first major role.

They join fellow cast members John Lithgow (“Conclave,” “The Crown”) as Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer (“Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning,” “The White Queen”) as Minerva McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu (“I May Destroy You,” “Gangs of London”) as Severus Snape, Nick Frost (“Shaun of the Dead,” “Hot Fuzz”) as Rubeus Hagrid, Luke Thallon (Tom Stoppard’s “Leopoldstadt,” Rupert Goold’s “Patriots”) as Quirinus Quirrell and Paul Whitehouse (“The Fast Show,” “Harry & Paul”) as Argus Filch.

The “Harry Potter” series is written and executive produced by Gardiner, who also serves as showrunner. Mylod will executive produce and direct multiple episodes of the series for HBO in association with Brontë Film and TV and Warner Bros. Television. The series is executive produced by author J.K. Rowling, Neil Blair, and Ruth Kenley-Letts of Brontë Film and TV, and David Heyman of Heyday Films.

They're already attacking them, saying it's "woke" because the Hermione actor isn't white and they cast a black actor as Snape.

It's sad that the whole industry is now relying on remakes with a propaganda twist.

It's sad that you think a character in an adaptation of a novel being played by a non-white actor is propaganda

Let's not act like it's not done to pursue an agenda, while also being repeated on a large scale consistently. Hence, it is by definition propaganda.

                And it isn't woke?
Hermione is actually novel accurate, as it was never said that she is white, and in fact it is mentioned that she has brown bushy hair, so this is accurate.
But Snape is explicitly mentioned being pale skinned, so yes, casting black actor as Snape is not accurate and it's them being woke, which btw never does well in public...

It's not fucking "woke" ffs. Have you ever seen the actor act?? I can certainly imagine him playing Snape. His skin colour is completely irrelevant to the story. It's an adaptation of a children's novel not a depiction of some historical individual, get a grip.

Brother I don't care about the skin color of the actor if it's still lore accurate. But in this specific case it is mentioned in the books that Snape is pale/yellow skinned. And it doesn't matter if the novel is about historical individual or made up person, directors and screen writers give themselves too much liberty nowadays and they don't stay true to the material that made it successful in the first place.

It is definitely woke, because otherwise you are telling me that there is NO ACTOR in the entire world who could be a good fit for Snape and still have lore accurate look? I don't believe that :'D

If skin color is irrelevant to the story and we focus on childrens novel, then sure let's make Pocahontas, Moana or Mulan white - we shouldn't, because their ethnicity and skin color is part of the lore.

I'm not saying the TV show will be bad because of it, I believe he will act well, but I still consider it trying to be woke, because of last how many years of producers/directors doing that (snow-white most recent example).
