Activision's Call of Duty series is the biggest gaming franchise in the world. The quasi-realistic military FPS games boasts more concurrent users than Facebook and every installment over the last few years has been met with the kind of rabid anticipation that few other entertainment events can match.
It's always a big deal when a COD game comes out and rumors have strongly hinted that this year's installment would be Modern Warfare 3, a true sequel to Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, the game that established the series' hegemony. f the leaks are to be believed, Modern Warfare 3 appears to pick up right after MW2, with the invasion of the United States by Russian forces in full swing and protagonists Soap McTavish and John Price on the run. Other plot highlights include a devastating attack on New York City and player turns as a Russian secret service agent and a British SAS operative. The conflict escalates to embroil much of western Europe's major cities, including London, Paris and Berlin. With additional levels that take place in Prague, Dubai and Washington, D.C., it basically sounds like the three development studios building the game�Infinity Ward, Raven and Sledgehammer�want MW3 to be a World War III simulator.
But no one really plays COD for the story, right? Kotaku's coverage also includes significant spoilers on what to expect in MW3's multiplayer portion. It'll supposedly have a section like Gears of Wars' Horde Mode, where you and teammates battle against increasingly numerous waves of enemies, and SpecOps modes that will be mission-based. Nothing yet on how MW3's multiplayer will tie into the web-based platform Activision has announced for Call of Duty, though.
Head on over to Kotaku for the whole story. It's a lot to take in and, if accurate, represents a huge breach of the secrecy surrounding what's sure to be one of the year's biggest games. As expected, Activision hasn't yet commented on the leak. I, for one, would love it if they just said, "Yup. It's all true.
