got a virus and need help restoring files

i got a virus on my computer a few days a go
i got an adapter to make my hard drive into an external hard disc
i plugged it into my computer but it would not let me look through my account's files [probably cause my account had a password] but it has let me look through other files
does anyone know how i can look through them so i can copy and paste them onto another computer?
