  • Project X Haren aka Merthe's birthday

So a few weeks ago, a fifteen year old girl sent her friends an invitation on Facebook for her upcoming sweet sixteen party. But as you might have guessed already, she forgot to make it a private event. A day later more than a thousand people were invited and a couple hundred people, who never met her, had accepted the invitation. So at the end of the day she deleted the event. But some unknown people then created a new event, with the same name and still as the birthday party for that girl at her house, in a small but rich town called Haren, right beneath Groningen, a city in the north of the Netherlands, exactly where I live. They called it Project X Haren. And it went viral fast. The FB page said 220.000 invites, 32.000 participants and there was nonstop talk. People made T-shirts, trailers on youtube, made appointments, and started participating the birthday party from all over the country.

Last night has to be one of the most bizarre nights I ever went through. I kind of lost faith in my generation tbh. A thing which started as a party, turned into a battlefield. The police estimates that there were between 5.000 and 8.000 younger people who turned up for the girls birthday. While she was taken into protective, thousands of people wandered through the town Haren, with a group of hooligans up front destroying literally everything that came into their path and fighting with the police. Houses, shops have been destroyed, malls have been broken into for cigarettes, cars have been destroyed. There have been 30 arrests and 30 people who have been taken to the hospital wounded, including an 83 year old man who discovered a tall young man sneaking through his house, and then got his head smashed in with a brick. He‘s still alive.

Here are some videos that people made of everything that went down. I was there with some friends, because it was close by and we wanted to see if there was a party. And if it turned out into the big party, only if, that would have been awesome. And the first hours were good I heard. People had fun in the centre of town, but then it became very crowded and it turned into pure chaos. Events on Facebook like these attract all sorts of people. Certainly not only people who like to party, as the videos will show you. I feel that in our country there is a lot of hate towards the justice system for no particular reason and people think they can do anything they want. Luckily everyone has a smartphone and all of those idiots will be prosecuted in the end anyway lol. What an experience in the end though. But I wonder, after you see this, do you share my opinion or is it the same where you live?
