Consumers have been warned that they face huge bills for using mobile phones to access the internet while on holiday this summer — despite moves by Brussels to clamp down on onerous charges. Mobile phone operators such as Orange have been charging customers thousands of pounds for inadvertently searching the internet while abroad. This is because smart phones such as iPhones and BlackBerrys have automatic roaming functions that users must switch off when they do not need access to the internet.
One Sunday Times reader faces a bill of £1,850 after her son continuously accessed the internet on his BlackBerry while on a family holiday in Australia — even though she asked Orange how fees and charges would apply before they travelled.
