What is a good free recording program i can DL?

looking for a decent program that I can DL for free to record and start working on my production before I buy something more professional.I had the fruity loops 10 but it was just the demo, looking for something where I can save and reopen my projects as well as export them.What do you guys use?

Adobe Audition would probably be easiest to start with then move up to Pro Tools later on..
