I am a fireman and it took us a few minutes to get to the scene of a fully involved fire in a Suburban a few months back. The truck was already a metal shell by the time we got there, and we were just 3 minutes away from the firehouse. car fires burn real bad in a short amount of time.
So for this crash, by the time the fire dept got to the scene, attached the hose to the hydrant, and the lines from the truck to the burning car, and started shootin the water there would have been no hope Just a real bad situation
As for approaching a burning car, firefighter or not, can be dangerous. With new cars, parts such as bumper struts, airbags etc etc have been known to literally shoot hundreds of feet off the car. We firefighters stand at a safe distance and put it out from there, then move on in to put out any remaining flames.
What baffles me is that the video from the cell phone that first surfaced online, that not one person in that car got out to help-even in a dangerous situation. However a part of the car did fly off in the video I think I'll have to watch it again.
All in all a tragic day
You're a fireman? Huge respect and salute from me
