I liked the Godzilla which came in 1998. It was awesome and i still consider it as the best when compared to the new one.

1998 edition isn't even in the same league as this one

I'm very attached to the 1998 Godzilla, it's one of the movies of my childhood. I saw it at the cinema and absolutely loved it.
It's thrilling, funny and jaw-droppingly spectacular for those times. And Jean Reno's performance is priceless, one of the most unforgettable ones of the whole 90's IMO.

Really don't understand why people hate so merciless on that movie...and on Roland Emmerich. Movies like Godzilla or Independence Day will always be in my heart, can't forget how those ones got me excited as a kid.
Maybe the only fault of that movie was not being faithful to the traditional japanese "Gojira", but honestly I couldn't care less about that.

Haven't seen the new one so I won't draw comparisons, those were just my two cents

Woops, didn't mean to thank the post above...

But to give my opinion on the 1998 version. First off, I still haven't seen the new Godzilla movie, so a comparison is not possible at the moment. Secondly, when I was a kid I thought the '98 Godzilla was freaking awesome! I mean, who wouldn't love seeing a huge monster go crazy in a big city, as a kid? It's a dream come true.

But when watched today, Emmerich's monster movie is overly silly and extremely stupid. Most of the times it doesn't want to take itself seriously, which is fine, but sometimes it wanna get all dramatic and that just doesn't work together with the rest. The acting is for the most part really mediocre and there are too many stupid things to enjoy it all the way through (psss... Godzilla disappears in Manhattan). It has its moments but overall it doesn't work at all. The only reason I might actually watch it again (or at least parts of it) is because it reminds me of childhood and such. But by no means is it a great movie.

I admit I haven't re-watched the '98 Godzilla in a minute, so I can't really tell what feeling I would get. My post was mainly based on memories. About the silliness I kinda agree, but...it's a monster movies after all, it ain't 12 Years A Slave lol, can't really blame it for being dumb fun. Is Pacific Rim any smarter?
However I disagree about the acting being terrible. Even tho the main guy is meh (btw what happened to him? Never saw him again lol), most of the supporting cast is on point IMO, and able to deliver exhilarating and mesmerizing characters (Hank Azaria, the dude who runs after Zilla with a camera and nearly gets stepped on, the Mayor who's addicted to gummy bears..and did I mention how tremendous Jean Reno is in that?).
That said, I wouldn't say it's a great movie, but when I think back about it, I can't help but think of how much fun I had watching it

A movie about Skull Island (King Kong island) has been confirmed as well.

Godzilla 3 is most certainly going to be a Godzilla vs. King Kong movie.
