A cold war is when there isn't any full blown combat occuring between two sides.

war is usually 'fought' through other avenues such as sport,proxy wars, economics and politics.

World War is basically open warfare between most countries in this world.

Cold War is a geopolitical situation, that is just little short of open warfare, it is actually a situation where one side uses threats and propaganda, media..etc in order to "defeat" other side.

So World War = Lots of countries fighting with guns and killing people.

Cold War = Two or more sides fighting via media and propaganda and not killing people..

But difference is so small, that Cold War can switch to a real War very fast.. And Cold War usually means that there will be a real war soon..
