What exactly is anime? Is it short for animation?

Its Japanese animation. Certain types are really childish because some types are for kids, so you have to watch what you buy or watch. But if you're into blood and gore, violence and language; than you might want to give Wicked City, Akira, or Afro Samurai, or Elfen Lied a try. I'm not going to say you are or you're not going to like anime. But if you're looking for something with a lot of violence, than those are a good start.
