  • ATTN: Non Americans

im having a very civil discussion w a friend about the difference between, american football, a football, futbol, soccer & a soccer ball.

    so you have two sports.

one is played w a brown oval shaped ball & involves touchdowns, tackles, etc.

one is played w a white & black round ball & involves goals.

in america, you play football w a football.
in america, you play soccer w a soccer ball.

anywhere else in the world... you play american football w a football.
anywhere else in the world... you play futbol (soccer) w a ______?

so im going to list what i believe to be facts & id like you to tell me where im wrong.

americans play football w a football.
americans play soccer w a soccer ball.
    non-americans play american football w a football.
    non-americans play futbol w a soccer ball... ?

I can only speak on England but not many people watch, play or follow American football over here. We call what you call "soccer" as "football" and we play it with a football lol.

I think the "football" title makes sense for this sport as it is played with feet and a ball. I've never understood why American football is called "football"

        its hard to explain.

when football came to america it was called association football & it was run by the football association. at some point, they took the "soc" from association football & starting calling it soccer. it was slang. but it caught on & eventually everybody was calling it soccer as opposed to football. meanwhile, what you consider american football came along & they called it football because the sport involves kicking the ball w your foot. same reason you guys call football, football. BUT everybody at that point in time already knew the sport football as "soccer" so there was no reason to not call it football. because the term soccer was created. that probably makes no sense to you but i hope that helps.

basically, if the slang term "soccer" never became popular. us americans would undoubtedly still call the sport football & we would play it w a football, like you. this would have forced us to create a new term for what we call football. but there was no need, so we just call it football.

also on a side note. definition of a ball: a round or roundish body or mass, a spherical or conical projectile.

so if you know what conical means, technically speaking, modern projectile ammunition meets the definition of a ball. as does a ball used in rugby. which is named after a school...

the point being, your misconception of the definition of the word ball doesnt make something not a ball. it means you dont know what a ball is. w that being said. not retarded, just cultural differences between countries. the world is full of them. for example, "Most Norwegians, including many doctors, generally believe that 90% of diseases can be cured with one or a combination of these three elements: physical exercise, Tran (codliver oil), and ibuprofen/paracetamol." thats not retarded at all lol... its just a cultural difference.

also if youre going to insult an entire country & call them retarded over a lack of understanding, try not to end your sentence w an adverb such as, even. its poor grammar.
