It's not legal, it started out as an social experiement in the 1970's, since early 2000's the police have been trying to stop the open cannabis sale but failed to do so because it'll usually end up in riots and the sale will be back up the next day with new dealers..

It's a cool place to be on vacation for a week, 26th september is the birthday of the freetown where it'll be music, ballons and some special offers (butter, oil, cookies etc..) cops mostly go for dealers afaik but you should be careful when leaving the area.
