...Well, I was using GIMP. It's not as good, but I'll try better next time.

You could look up some simple tutorials and just mess around with the program. You dont necessarily have to be making somthing but just play with settings and different effects.
If you really want to get good at GFX then I recommend getting Photoshop. You could get photoshop elements to start which is just a little simpilar and way cheap than other PS's like cs2 or cs3
