So much of their stuff was powerful messages. They weren't punchline rappers. Lyricism MADE them the greatest. Of course they have some mainstream tracks as well that are fun to listen to, but the majority of their stuff sends messages. That's what separates them from Wayne.

But like I've said for the third time, it all depends on the listener's taste and what he likes to hear in the songs. I'm not trying to push my musical tastes on anyone and say you have to like what I like. The only reason I'm pointing this out is because Xclusive replied to my wanting a more lyrical track from Wayne with a post like "Who the hell wants lyrical songs? You're stupid". I have a problem with that because lyrical songs is what made hip-hop's legends who they are.

In case you missed it, I already said it's a hot track and I really can't wait for the CDQ / Dirty version. It's a sick song, I love the hook, and I'll be bumping it often when it drops in proper form. That said, it's not quite the amazing track a lot of you are making it out to be. Obviously it's the first song we've got from Wayne in a long, long time, especially for his own project instead of just a verse for someone else's mixtape or whatever, so it's definitely exciting to get something new, but it's not quite all that. JMO.

Being a fan of Lil Wayne doesn't mean you have to love every song he makes. Not everything an artist touches is gold.

I agree with the premise of what you're saying, but to play Devil's advocate

You mentioned Tupac/Nas because of their messages, but Rakim and Big L are also 2 of the greatest rappers ever, and they had very few songs with messages. Rakim mostly rapped about how dope he is on the mic, and he did it with excellent flow and rhyme schemes. Big L was strictly a punchline rapper with awesome wordplay/flow. Neither of them are known for having lyrical depth or meaningful songs.

So having more songs with messages does not necessarily equate to being a better rapper, nor do you have to be a rapper that relies on meaningful songs with messages to be great. Tupac/Nas just happen to be 2 rappers that fit that bill

No, I don't need help. I just prefer songs that relate to me and my situations. I'm not ultra rich. I don't drive luxury cars. I don't have sex every night. I don't do drugs. While punchlines about those topics are funny, I can't relate to Wayne's lyrics much anymore, so they can only go so far. Some songs I like are about experiences that I've actually gone through or have gone through. Others are about topics that I can see myself going through soon. You learn how to make good decisions from your own experiences and witnessing experiences of others. I learn from what guys like J. Cole, Nas, 2Pac, and Fashawn have gone through and try to apply it to my life. Their music is like an aspect of school to me because they teach me different things...what to do...what not to do...how to approach this situation...etc. For example, "Dreams" and "Losing My Balance" are two tracks from J. Cole that directly apply to my life right now because I'm in the same situation with this girl. I just prefer to listen to that kind of stuff, because I've seen so many real life situation through so many different perspectives through rappers. It's really the same thing as talking to your friend about this girl and him giving you advice on what she likes and how you should approach ask her on a date or whatever the fuck you want to do. Just my personal taste of music, man.

I don't really think it's really Wayne's project. It's his labels, since they have a bunch of Wayne tracks sitting around and we haven't heard Wayne in a while they decided to put them out

Exactly, I don't see him actually recording song's for this before he went to Riker's. Probably was just an idea he/people on his label had. Easy way to make some money while he's locked up, give something for the fan's, and help keep him relevant.

Very true. Although I'm not a big fan of either one you mentioned, they definitely are some of the greatest to ever do it. I guess a comeback I'd have is that both of those still have a claim to fame. Rakim was known for his complex rhyme schemes like you mentioned, and it sparked a mini-revolution in verse structure that a lot of big name rappers followed, and still follow. Big L was a battle rapper -- arguably the best of that type of rap which doesn't really exist anymore in today's hip hop.

What is Lil Wayne's claim to fame? Tha Carter II was a classic southern album from the production to the flow to some really clever, well structured punchlines that created different pictures and different messages. Tha Carter III was a big step down from that, and his punchlines have become simpler and simpler, and the topics have become more of the same mainstream stuff in just about every song. I mean, he has the radio hits and he puts out songs like no other, but other than that, what is his legacy or claim to fame? Nelly put out a ton of radio hits, too. Eminem and MF DOOM have insane punchlines AND they have more complicated structure. Maybe Rakim and Big L weren't very inspiration with their music, but they had claims to fame in their pocket. I dunno that Wayne really has that luxury.

Yeah, he has lyrical songs. He has the potential to put out an incredibly lyrical album -- I don't doubt that. I've heard just about every Wayne song there is. He was my favorite rapper for a long, long time. It wasn't too long ago that his verse on Nas's "My Generation" was recorded and was released so it's obvious he can still bring it lyrically if he wants to. But the key word is WANT. That's one tough decision so many rappers have to go through. Do I go mainstream or do I stay lyrical? If I go mainstream and put out club bangers about luxury cars and women, I can sell millions. If I stay lyrical, I might be mentioned with Pac, Nas, Biggie, and other legendary rappers as one of the best, most inspiration rappers ever. Kanye mentioned that decision in Jesus Walks...

"So here go my single dog radio needs this
They say you can rap about anything except for Jesus
That means guns, sex, lies, video tapes
But if I talk about God my record won't get played Huh?"

Wayne is actually considered a sell-out by hip-hop heads because they know he has the potential to put together some insanely clever punchlines with good messages behind them. They know he can do that because he's done it on Tha Carter II and he's done it on different verse features. It's in his arsenal and we all know it. However, instead of mastering that skill and putting out an entire album that might have been considered one of the best of all-time, he 'sold-out' to the mainstream with hits like "Lollipop" and "A Milli" that have good production, good flows, and some cool punchlines, but little substance. That's why a lot of people hate him now. Now, don't get me wrong, I don't hate Wayne at all. I still listen to him and like his stuff, but I simply would prefer if he went back to that older, more complicated style he once had.

If he could put the Hustler Muziks, Cry Outs, Go Gettas, Tie My Hands, Misunderstoods, Pray to the Lord, and My Generation type tracks all in one album and built a strong central message with it, it could easily be considered one of the greatest albums of all-time, if not the greatest. Critics know that if Wayne puts Tha Carter II's complex metaphors and flows into songs with good lyrical content, Wayne is literally unstoppable. Problem is, Wayne never has consistently went that direction and people hate him for that.

Agree, i mean they just mixed it a couple days ago so you know it wasn't meant for a project because if that was the case it would've been done a long time ago and Empire wouldn't have it

Yeah kadillak, Wayne knows it too. On Don't Die from LFLS, he says "And just think, I'm one sell out record away from being famous
Shit I guess I ain't it" and I do agree that CII > CIII. I'm hoping Wayne just used CIII to get his name out there and goes back to his roots and realizes his potential in CIV. I think his time in prison will give him a new perspective and have him making deeper, more lyrical songs (while keeping the amazing punchlines of course). At least that's what I'm hoping for. If Right Above It really is a CIV throwaway, I think we are looking at an amazing album on the horizon
