It's what they've all been waiting for. Oh, don't worry, I'm not gonna flame YOUR favorite album. But, before we get into this review that's going to bring in boatloads of haters, I will say. I listened to C3 all the way through, and some songs I feel slightly different about. Now, I'm still not going to say this album is good compared to Wayne's older works (I say it's lukewarm) but I will say it's okay for the new Lil Wayne (Tunechi). Well, what am I rambling for, let's get into this review so I can stop worrying about it xD
Tha Carter III [2008]
01 - 3 Peat [5/5] - The Mixtape Wayne goes in again, but this time on a Maestro beat for nearly 3 minutes and 19 seconds. Now, while I admit, I prefer I'm Me from Tha Carter III Sessions, this track is a classic intro that's one of the better tracks on the album.
02 - Mr. Carter (Feat. Jay Z) [5/5] - The promotional song that really got me hyped up for this album when I heard it. It's a classic tune with a chipmunk-ish chorus and epic beat, and to top it off, there's a feature from the great! Very nice way to start the flow of the album.
03 - A Milli [5/5] - It's simple. You either love or hate A Milli, but either way, it's a classic track. To be straight off the dome with good wordplay and still being able to flow very well is exceptional to me. Me personally, I think that this should have been the lead single.
Now, you're probably wondering, where's the hate? Well...
04 - Got Money (Feat. T-Pain) [2/5] - The overall decline of the album starts here, IMO. And while I don't completely hate Got Money, it's still pretty bad. This track was an obvious attempt at the pop Billboard, and it didn't fail to do so. But as an album track on a hip hop album, this track is a SKIPPPPPP! (For me atleast)
05 - Comfortable (Feat. Babyface) [3.5/5] - I used to hate this track, but each time I force myself to listen to C3 all the way through, it grows on me, like a fungi. I admit, it's not one of my favorites, on this album or of all time. But, it's a nice, slow tune that was obviously aimed at Wayne's female fans. Which makes it a good track for that reason. Girls like this track a lot, and it's not horrible like the other tracks which are aimed at females. So, it's a good track.
06 - Dr. Carter [5/5] - A classic standout among most of the album, and of Lil Wayne's career as a whole. I like the creativity of this track a lot and the lyrics are clever. Wayne portrays himself as the doctor of hip hop, which is a very original topic and very hilarious. Nice going, Weezy!
07 - Phone Home [2/5] - Another track where Wayne does some roleplaying. But this time, as a martian. So, Wayne's a rapper, lean sipping doctor of hip hop alien millionaire? Well... He is one of my favorite rappers... So... But on to the track. The hook is borderline wack to me. I find it funny and weird at the same time. The concept is interesting, but the lyrics and flow are... meh...
08 - Tie My Hands (Feat. Robin Thicke) [5/5] - Another Lil Wayne, Robin Thicke duet, but this time, instead of making rappers fear the south, it's a smooth, soulful ballad about the hurricane and Wayne's experience... Very dark and depressing.
09 - Mrs. Officer (Feat. Bobby V & Kidd Kidd) [1.5/5] - Another hit aimed towards the female audience, and this one... Is... Ugh... I would like it more it the hook weren't annoying and most of the song wasn't hook. But, the concept is very interesting. Wayne does story telling about his experiences with him and a lady cop... It's both bizarre and intriguing.
10 - Let The Beat Build [3.5/5] - Another mixtape-ish vibe track. In this one, Wayne raps about absolutely nothing while the instrumentals are slowly building up. It's a nice track with nice production. Wayne's flow is a bit off, but the production really makes it un-noticeable. Kanye did an amazing job with the concept of this track, one of my all time favorite rappers and producers.
11 - Shoot Me Down (Feat. D. Smith) [4.5/5] - A slower song that has a nice hook and good production. The lyrics and vibe from it really make me appreciate it. But sadly, this is where the album gets way worse...
12 - Lollipop (Feat. Static Major) [ .5/5] - Now, I could sit here and flame Lollipop for hours. But, it's as simple as this. I like when artists experiment and branch out, but this is just.... I consider Lollipop the sellout anthem of Lil Wayne and the anthem for all the new Lil Wayne stans. It's a horrible song as far as substance is concerned and before this song came out, it was very easy to defend Lil Wayne and back him up... But it's ish like this that make me despise C3... It's a horrible lead single with drug addled autotune, no rapping, and an infectious beat with barely any verses. It's a perfect pop hit, and reminds me of Outkast's Hey Ya. I hate Lollipop, and that's final. No changing my mind.
13 - La La (Feat. Brisco & Busta Rhymes) [1/5] - Talk about horrid... The only thing that gets this track a star is the interesting production. With a disappointing verse from Busta and Wayne's boring lyrics, I don't like this track. But, I seem to never really skip this track just to hear Brisco say "Then I got horny!"...
14 - Playing With Fire (Feat. Betty Wright) [4/5] - Now, I know that this is a favorite with a lot of fans (New or old) and I will probably get flamed (Get it :3) but I think this track is classic, it had a weak start IMO. The third verse is very nice and part of the second verse. Try not to be so harsh on me for my opinion though...
15 - You Ain't Got Nothin On Me (Feat. Fabolous & Juelz Santana) [3.5/5] - One of the better tracks on the album, thankfully. I like it, it's not a bad track, but Wayne could've had a better verse on it. IMO, Fabolous murked him...
16 - Misunderstood/Don'tGetIt [2.5/5] - A classic Wayne track, but... Wayne, did you have to put a speech at the end of the track without separating it from the actual track? Like when Wayne gets done with the rapping, it goes to an Outro track with him and the speech. Idk... Maybe that's just me -.-
Bonus Tracks (As requested by breezy214) -
Now, while I didn't like the album much... The bonus tracks are OK at best.
01 - Lollipop (Remix) (Feat. Static Major & Kanye West) [4.5/5] - Filled with complex rhymes, good wordplay and hilarious lyrics from both rappers is the version of Lollipop that I can tolerate and that I actually like. I can't say who had the better part on the song, but I will say, I do like Wayne's last verse.
02 - Prostitute II [3.5/5] - A lot of mumbling in this track, IMO. I like the storytelling aspect, but I wish it was a bit more audible. It's not a bad track, just... Meh. Ya know?
03 - Action [3/5] - Not a personal favorite. It just sounds like a banger that would be a hit in clubs.
04 - Whip It [2/5] - Easily the worst bonus track... I don't care for the "Whip it like a slave" simile, and the beat sounds like Lollipop's beat on steroids. It's also a bit too lengthy for my taste.
Best tracks on the album:
1. 3 Peat
2. A Milli
3. Dr. Carter
4. Mr. Carter
5. Shoot Me Down
Best bonus track:
1. Lollipop (Remix)
Overall: 53.5/80 [3.3/5] Solid
This album wouldn't have, IMO, been better without all the crap pop tracks. I hate Lollipop for being the first single released after nearly a 3 year hiatus. I expected something that would be ya know, rap. Something that succeeded his previous classic mixtape works, something that surpassed his previous studio albums and something that wouldn't make people under appreciate my favorite rapper... This album IS overrated to the dickens, and i'm standing by that, 4EVA. I hated every single (except A Milli), I thought this album was disappointing and I really just expected better from my favorite rapper. I understand that if Tha Carter III wasn't leaked, this album would be classic on many different levels, but oh well... That's to whoever leaked this classic album and made Wayne resort to shit like Lollipop...
But, that's it for now. Next up is one that people either love, or hate...
