I remember a fair bit because back when I was that young 9/10 I was properly into hiphop. From what I remember he wasn't too big really..or at least overseas (yet) and so I never really heard much about Weezy until he dropped C1 and then Go DJ was played a fair bit on Tim Westwood friday night show along with some of the other singles.
Problem was he was still up and coming and was overshadowed by the heavy weights who were at the time dominating hiphop (Ruff Rydas, G-Unit, Shady Records artists, etc.) but then when G-Unit dissolved and Em went in hiding, Wayne became the focal point for rap for a while, that's where he shon, I'd say he was easily the same respect level as K.Dot is now back at that point yeah.

Lil Wayne is still top 3 in the game today. Only Eminem and Kanye are in the sns league K. Lamar is overrated.

Its a difficult question tbh bro. They are very different artists and were realms apart when they both were in there prime, if kendricks peaked yet that is. But kendricks credibility has come from his relativity in the sense, that coming out of the hood is a more respected thing nowadays,as it isnt being seen as 'the right way ' the way it used to be seen and more people can relate to his lyrics and mentality as he delves into a individual spirituality that is needed to progress when gods thrown u a bad hand , and in the very spiritual world we live in today , kendrick saw his knoweledge and experience as a weapon for success nd destruction, so in that sense kendricks prime was pretty much planned to an extent. Where as Dwayne carters characters life, Lil wayne' literally unfolded infront of our eyes and we saw a boy that turned into a man that went through the mental and pyshical effect of growing up plus stardom plus fame plus drugs plus fatherhood, but yh i could go on for ages but , waynes prime was more respected amongst his peers i think ,as they saw him go from an artist to a business to a beast that lost himself many a time and found himself many a time, i mean this niggas insanity was channelled through music and it made the some of the best music ever. But the question is very hard to answer lol, the critics who made there prime possible are from complete different generations so its difficult but i think the impact Of prime may be in waynes corner as he was like a tool that we the audience would use to sometimes answer certain shit and use to our advantage, but yeah anyways wayne was a legend in his prime and we saw him grow, where as kendricks prime was more thought out nd calculated obviously he couldnt determine the outcome of his music of story telling and personal experiences would be as it isLast edited by zTunechi-; 02-09-2014, 08:04 PM.

Honestly yeah, Wayne was probably more respected. Everyone wanted to be like him and wanted to look cool bumping him. I don't hear too many people just casually bumping Kendrick Lamar. Back then people would play him nonstop in cars, radio, phones, etc. It was just hard to avoid him considering he was EVERYWHERE.
The industry gives him respect as a legend and loves him, especially his prime. It's just the "fans" that are too stubborn and thick-headed to acknowledge that their fav rappers like or liked Wayne; prime or not.

Whoever just mentioned Hollywood Divorce... yes! I love that song. Wayne murked Andre 3k on that.

Yeah, Wayne was much more respected than Kendrick. He was a hell of a lot more versatile and witty. This nigga practically breathed new life into the game. He had swagger rap and meaningful rap all in one package.
The ONLY reason he has haters is because he completely took over as the face of hip hop and even managed to transcend it in a way only Eminem had done previously. When anything gets too popular the haters become VERY vocal and even powerful enough to sway more casual opinions. It's sad.
Yeah, Wayne isn't what he once was, but in all honesty it's due to his subject matter. He doesn't really talk about anything anymore. It isn't his mic presence or skill that's weaker than other artists today. It's just what he chooses to talk about. Because when I think about it, nothing Kendrick says makes me say, "Wow, how to did he think of that?" Nothing Kendrick says has me stumped as to wtf he's trying to say. I get everything he spits and I don't have to dissect his bars. It's just his subject matter is a lot deeper than Wayne's these days.
Lil Wayne, Drake, Chance the Rapper, Skooly, Rich Homie Quan, 2 Chainz.
