I am a more old school style wayne fan. for years I've been telling myself I can't get into Wayne's new style which has really been developing since D4 if you think about it. Finally, with D6 and D6R I hear that he's reached a lyrical level that's maybe in the universe of where he was operating 10-12 years ago. The beats are totally different now, and so is his flow, but now his bars are loaded with actual decent punchlines and cold ass fucking lines. Sure it all sounds goofy sometimes compared to DD3 or D2, but by that rationale so does most of hip hop in 2018.
I guess what i'm saying is: since S4TW2 he's been more consistently good as a rapper. Now with the 35 crazy tracks that make up D6, I kind of buy this new style of his as good rap for the first time in a long time. I never liked D5 much, but go back and listen to bitch don't kill my vibe or new slaves... ech, the lyrics and flows are fucking rough. Just a bunch of half formed thoughts and unfunny jokes. Now he's vibing proper. He is following ideas for several lines to make larger points and punchlines.
The litmus test for me was always: Would I introduce someone who's never heard Wayne with the track ______ ? 9.9 times out of 10 anything post prison was a no-no! Lots of these 35 though... XO Tour Life, 80s, Bank Account, For Nothing... that's good rap any way you look at it IMO. I feel like D6 in full is all the strengths of S4TW2, FWA and NC2 rolled into one, then taken to the next level. Good shit, Wayne.
BUT... remember how during those IANAHB2 days so many of us tried telling ourselves it was dope? Denial is a strong thing. LOL. Hope we ain't doing that now! But nah, this is for real dope.
